I just tried out a bunch of SNES games for the first time. If you're into retro gaming (as you should be) I strongly recommend E.V.O. Search for Eden, SkyBlazer and U.N. Squadron.

Been playing a lot of random games for my "ranked by preference lists" but for this post, I'll focus on the mobile games...

Chaos Rings II (iPhone) - Square Enix is having a year-end sale, slashing away at the price of many of their games. Chaos Rings II was a game I didn't want to pay $17 for...I don't like paying more than $10 for something I don't have a physical copy for. Thankfully, this sale dropped the price down to $9 and I snatched it up. I'm liking it so far...The story already seems more interesting than the other two games in the series...And it has room for it to be much more tragic, as well.

Chaos Rings (Android) - Got my first new phone...Well, ever. It's an Android. Downloaded a few games, and since Square Enix's sale is also on the Google Play store, the normally $12 Chaos Rings has been dropped down to $4. Since I enjoyed it a lot on the iPhone, I felt $4 was a reasonable price to pay for me to compare the game on both formats.

Civilization Revolution (iPhone) - I got this for free about three years ago...And never played it. Now that I finally have, I can't stop. My only real complaint is that the game ends after a set number of turns no matter what...I like to take my sweet time and methodically take out my opponents...So the time limit is a little irritating for me. But otherwise, I really enjoy this game and I highly recommend it.

Mafia II: Greatest Hits and Hitman: Absolution are the two games that I am currently playing non stop. I thought after the six year hiatus that IO Interactive had with the Hitman franchise would have diminished the quality, but that isn't the case at all. A definite Game of the Year candidate, in my opinion. I finally got my grubby hands on the complete edition of Mafia II for $17.99 at Gamestop. All of the DLC. Good things come to those who wait, I suppose.

Pokemon Black 2, Pandora's Tower, and Xenoblade as of now.
astro_man23 11 years, 5 months ago at Dec 25 5:25 -
Flashback: Quest for Identity (Sega Genesis) - A little mom-and-pop's retro video game store opened up here in my town and I have found lots of interesting oldschool gems, including a complete copy of this awesome little game. Parts of it reminded me of Another World, a purely excellent game by the way, but I mostly picked it up because I own the PSone sequel, Fade to Black.

The Last Story (Nintendo Wii) - I finally picked up the collector's edition of this for $40 at Best Buy. I am totally loving it so far, especially since my team is half-naked. I will probably play it all day tomorrow ...surrounded by a circle of empty beer bottles. Merry XMAS!

Dishonored (Playstation 3) - My wrestling nerdery got in the way of playing this game shortly after I started it when WWE '13 came out. But, I've gone back and finished it...A little peeved as I specifically tried to avoid killing enemies in the game for a trophy (and because I just enjoy playing the game without being noticed as much as possible) and since I re-wired an electrical field rather than dis-armed it, and an enemy walked through it, without realizing it, I lost me kill-less game. I finished it, but I'll likely be going back through soon to see how chaotic things get when I murder everyone in sight in the next playthrough.

Mass Effect (Playstation 3) - With the original Mass Effect (and my favorite in the series) on the PS3 for the first time, I thought I'd use that as an excuse to play through the game for the fourth time. It's mostly like the 360 version, but it may be a little buggier. I'm finding myself stuck in places and I occasionally get a frozen game...And I don't remember hacking into things being so difficult. Maybe my skills have declined, but when I can't even hit the first button command in time half the time, I feel like something is wrong more than how much I suck. I don't remember having many problems at all with that in the 360 version. But, aside from that, it's just as fun as it always was - flawed, but still very good.

Candy Crush Saga (Android) - A lot of folks who play video games as much as I do look down on casual games like this...To me, casual or not, if a game is good, it's good. Candy Crush Saga isn't the be all, end all for puzzle games, but it's fun. It's very much like Bejeweled, except with candy instead of jewels. You've got a limited number of moves to achieve a specific goal. If you can do it, you move on to the next level. If you can't, you can try again. Casual gamers will probably love it, expecially if they like Bejeweled. The more hardcore gamers might thumb their noses at it, but that's fine. Let 'em miss out.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (Playstation 3) - I finally got around to playing this one....I've had the game since shortly after it hit store shelves...Never got around to playing it until now....And it's already beaten, too. I liked it...But I'm not sure why it got so many 10 out of 10 reviews...It's good, but not that good. But anyway, it's beaten...Now maybe I'll talk myself into buying Uncharted 3 so I can finish off the trilogy.

Afrika (Playstation 3) - Very, very early into the game so I don't have an opinion yet. If it's as good as Animal Kingdom on the Wii was, I'll be happy. I'm looking forward to a nice, relaxing playthrough of taking photos of animals on a safari. Hopefully the game will supply me with my expectations.

Uno (Android) - I got hooked on Uno when it was released on Xbox Live...Then again when it was released on the Playstation Network. I avoided buying it on iTunes so I wouldn't get stuck playing it again....And then the Android comes along with their free games and gets me hooked on Uno all over again. I prefer the Xbox Live one over them all, but this portable one ain't too shabby, either.

10000000 (both on PC and iPhone) - Playing both versions and enjoying every minute of it. This is a unique puzzle game that can slightly be compared to Puzzle Quest for its RPG elements. The gameplay is very much different, though. The main theme is that you're imprisioned, and your only way out is by obtaining 10000000 points. This seems impossible at first, but as you upgrade your equipment and abilities, it becomes a reachable goal. Big fan of both versions, but I do slightly prefer the iPhone version over the version found on Steam.

Assassin's Creed (Playstation 3) - Played this back when it first came out, but never stuck with it long enough to beat it. Giving it the ol' college try now. Three or four assassinations in. Enjoying myself...But also finding myself getting bored rather quickly...And yet even when bored, I feel driven to keep playing. It's odd.

Metal Slug (Neo-Geo) - I adore this game. Also playing 2, 3, 4, 5, and X. Working on a Neo-Geo games ranked by preference list, so enjoying the fact that I get to play through these games again for screens and to accurately rank 'em instead of relying on my poor memory.

Ni no Kuni. Fun as hell right now and I'm just only 15 hours in so far.
ape 11 years, 3 months ago at Feb 4 9:10 -
Final Fantasy VII (PC) - The digital download is on sale over at SquareEnix's website - $5.99. So far, it's odd. The music isn't quite the same at is is on the Playstation. I'm not a big music guy, but I'm very good at noticing when pitches are off from what I'm used to. Also, some of the dialogue is different. Not a lot, but enough where I'm noticing it when it is. Also, the character models have been smoothed over, but the pre-rendered backgrounds didn't receive any sort of makeover whatsoever. All in all, it's not bad by any means so far...But I have come across a few bugs so far that I never came across in the Playstation version. It's still good, but as of right now, I'm favoring the PS One version over this.

Far Cry 3 (Playstation 3) - A friend mentioned that this game reminded him of Skyrim, except in a modern setting and with fewer bugs and glitches. Being a huge fan of that open-world, sandbox style of game, I picked this game up shortly after. Probably about 6 or 7 hours into it and I like it. I'm disappointed with the lack of hand-to-hand combat, as I really wanted to punch a shark, but I suppose being able to kill a guy from dropping from a hang-glider and stabbing him on the way down is a decent substitute. I love games with stealth, so I'm enjoying the stealth-encouraged combat a lot. I also haven't come across a single bug or glitch yet...Which is something that Bethesda needs to take note of. I can see myself putting a lot of hours into this one...Any game where I see a tiger tackle a guy off a pier, into the water, causing both to drown, is a game that I need to spend 100+ hours in.

LordDarkrai 11 years, 3 months ago at Feb 10 14:29 -
Finally beat Ni no Kuni and now going to get through .hack//Link.
ape 11 years, 3 months ago at Feb 10 22:57 -
Sill playing Final Fantasy VII and Far Cry 3, but also squeezing in...

Pokemon White Version 2 (Nintendo DS) - I like it. It feels more like an add-on to the first Pokemon Black and White games so far (I'm about 3-4 hours in), but that doesn't really bother me. I've only encountered a handful of new pokemon so far, too. I haven't seen anything that would make this game great yet....But as it is, so far, it's still pretty solid and a worthwhile playthrough for fans of the series.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - 10th Anniversary Edition (iPhone) - I doubt I'll play through to the end, but really enjoying just wandering around Vice City for the first time in years. Like GTA 3: 10th Anniversary, the game is here in its entirety and it even has a custom soundtrack option this time around. So, if you want some 80's-style GTA on the go, Vice City 10th Anniversary is like a dream come true.
LordDarkrai 11 years, 3 months ago at Feb 17 3:04 -
Been playing Devil Survivor 2, Shin Megami Tensei Imagine, and GTA Vice City at the moment.
ape 11 years, 3 months ago at Feb 19 13:00 -
Half-Life (PC) - I'm not a big first-person shooter fan, but I really enjoyed my time with Half-Life. I usually get bored with the constant firefights in a lot of first-person shooters. In Half-Life, the shooting is broken up by some clever puzzles and exploring of the wonderfully-designed environments. I just beat it yesterday, but I enjoyed my time so much that I'm considering going through again for a second time.

FlatOut (PC) - Played a bunch of this on the PS2 over at my friends' house, but I never had a copy to call my own. Now I do, and I'm enjoying myself for the most part. I'm having a blast with the mini games, but the racing is simply mediocre. It's not bad by any means, but there are better options if you're looking for racing games. If you're looking for party games, however, the mini games in FlatOut can easily make hours melt away if you're playing with a few friends.

Hotline Miami (PC) - Been playing this on and off over the past month or so. I adore it. The soundtrack is good. The gameplay is good. The atmosphere is good. It's just a good game all around. It's not absolutely great. But it's pretty dang fantastic. If you don't mind blood (lots of blood), give Hotline Miami a try. You might get hooked on it, too.
ape 11 years, 2 months ago at Feb 24 14:28 -
Same as above, plus...

Anodyne (PC) - Won this in a contest from a podcast I listen to....Which, no disrespect to them, I may be the only listener of hehe. But anyway, I'm loving it so far. It has a very strong resemblance to the 2D Zelda titles, but has enough of its own personality and charm to prevent it from being just merely a clone.

F1 Race Stars (Playstation 3) - Two of my friends have this, and they insist on me joining in with playing when I'm over at their house. The game itself is pretty fun...But like most kart racers, it can get very frustrating as the game often feels like having skill means nothing. If you're in last place on the last lap, you've still got a chance of finishing first if you can get the right power up. Likewise, if you dominated the whole race, there's a good chance that you'll end up near the end of the field somewhere between the final 30 seconds of the race and the finish. This issue happens a little too much in this game, leaving you with a feeling that you won or lost races due to luck rather than any sort of skill. The game is still fun, but prepared to get frustrated a lot if you play.

I seriously haven't played a game since I beat The Last Story. It ruined me for other games...

Joking. School has been a major drag this semester. Takin up all my free time. Damnz. I just bought like a million new games, too, including Ni no Kuni so that should keep me busy until the PS6 comes out.

Plus, I threw my damn back out. Don't do that. Don't ever do that. It was the suck.

Metal Gear Solid 4 (Playstation 3) - Found out that Konami finally patched the game 9 or so months ago with trophy support, so I'm going back...May make an effort to get a platinum on this one. I've beaten this game probably around 7 or 8 times, but it's been a few years since I last played it, so I'm a tad rusty right now. Looking forward to getting back into the "dominating the game on hardest difficulty" form I was the last time I played it.

Persona 4: Golden (Playstation Vita) - I've had the game since it released and had it in the Vita since I got it...Just now starting to play it. I was afraid that if I started to play it, it would consume my life and nothing else would get done...I was partially right. When I play Persona 4 (and 3 for that matter), I get consumed by the game. That said, I've been trying to manage my time outside of the game like I do inside of the game so that I don't find myself playing this non-stop in a 24-hour Persona fest...It's happened before. Sad, isn't it?

BlockenFighto (iPhone) - My favorite wrestling promotion running today is CHIKARA. They have the perfect blend of comedy and great, athletic wrestling that is just heads and shoulders above everything else in my opinion. They put out an app a few years back that was essentially an interactive coloring book. That was okay, but I wanted a game. BlockenFighto isn't exactly what I had in mind (I wanted a wrestling game), but it's still an addicting match-3 style puzzle game with some extra bells and whistles to keep you coming back for more. Plus, Dragon Dragon is represented in the game. Anything with Dragon Dragon in it is an automatic win. I also find it comical that Claudio Castagnoli (Antonio Cesaro to the WWE audience) made his way to two video games this year - WWE 13 as add-on content, and BlockenFighto - he's CHIKARA alumni. I'll keep playing until I unlock everything, though I have a feeling that I'm close to that. Either way, if you like wrestling or if you like puzzle games, get this game and help support a tremendous wrestling company in CHIKARA.

Playing Game of Thrones on Playstation 3 at the moment. The story so far is quite good and there are certain elements of it that I like, but the combat gets annoying and the voice acting is bad.

Also digging through some old Game Boy Advance games and checking out various Android games. There's a list on my profile if anyone wants to see.

I played Flower and Journey from the collector edition. Flower is a really relaxing game and Journey, all I will say about it is holy s***!

Can anybody vouch for the Little Big Planet racing game? I played the demo and it controls almost exactly like Mod Nation Racers. Thinking of picking it up.

That is an interesting set of games to play back to back.

And now I'm going to have some mugwort tea and probably dream about the Gray Man.

Rock of Ages (PC) - I don't mind this game using a mouse and keyboard...I'm enjoying myself, actually...But I can't help but feel like I'd enjoy this game so much more if I was controlling it with a controller. It's just a comfort thing on my end. Either way, I enjoy the quirky humor and unique art style of the cut scenes mixed with the simple (bust down the door of the enemy) gameplay. It's well worth a purchase.

Persona 4: Golden (Playstation Vita) - Still extremely addicted to this game...Actually went to work on about 30 minutes of sleep the other day because this game made me lose track of time, resulting in me unsuccessfully trying to get my insomniac behind asleep. Anyway, I'm about where I left off on the PS2 version now before I got distracted from that game...And I've gotta say, this game is dang near perfect so far. Persona 3 was a great game...Persona 4 improved on just about everything and changed things up just enough to make it feel like its not just a clone of Persona 3. This version of the game with all of its extras and new content very well could be a contender for my favorite RPG of all-time by the time I'm done.

Plants vs. Zombies (Playstation Vita) - I liked the iPhone version a lot. The Vita version is just a port, but it has the option of using the back touch pad to pick up sunlight as you go, which is rather nice. I also find it odd that this game is treated like a retail release, with an opportunity to obtain a platinum trophy in the game....But anyway, it's the same fun, just quite a bit more expensive than it is on iOS for reasons that I'm not 100% sure of.
ape 11 years, 1 month ago at Apr 2 9:49 -
Going game crazy the past few days so toss these two in with the ones above...

BioShock Infinite (Playstation 3) - Plowed through this one in two days. Probably could have beaten it in a fraction of the time, but I explored all over in an attempt to find everything without the use of a guide...I failed. But anyway, I really, really enjoy this game....And the more I think about it, the more I enjoy it....But I'm still not 100% convinced that it's the 10 out of 10 that so many reviewers have been claiming it to be. It's good enough where I'm on the fence of giving it a 9 or a 10, though. Might play through again soon to re-evaluate my thoughts.

God of War Ascension (Playstation 3) - Just started this one. I have yet to play a sub-par God of War game...They all end up being very good or great. The reviews I've seen, while not bad scores (like a 7.5-8.0 average) they're not close to the usual 9.0-10 scores past games in the series have gotten. So far, I'm enjoying myself, leaving me wonder if the poor scores come from the multiplayer aspects of the game....After playing through, if my thoughts conflict with the reviews, I'll go through and actually read them rather than look at the scores to see what issues people had that I may have overlooked.

Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut (Playstation 3) - Ever since beating it on Xbox 360, I've wanted to return to Greenvale and play through the craziness again. I've always loved the story in this game, but I hated much of the control scheme. When the Director's Cut was announced with some improved controls, I decided to put off playing this again until it got re-released. Well, the wait is over and I'm back. Not too far into it, but even if no improvements are made (though from what I remember, the melee combat is slightly improved), the extra scenes and such will be enough for me to feel like playing through it again is worth it.
EDIT: Aside from a few hours between playing where I hung out with friends for a bit, I spent the majority of the day playing Deadly Premonition, and the controls are definitely better. They're not perfect, but they're better. About 6-7 hours in, spending more time wandering around and collecting things than I did in the 360 version. I forgot how much I really enjoyed this game...And with the Director's Cut, many of my complaints about it have been fixed. I'm a very happy lad.

BioShock (Playstation 3) - After playing Infinite, I felt like finally going through and getting that Platinum trophy that I've been putting off. Hardest mode, Vita-chambers turned off...I'm about halfway through. BioShock is a game that gets easier the closer you get to the end, with you exposing the enemy weaknesses, and getting stronger weapons and plasmids...What was a ten-minute struggle to take down a Big Daddy in the beginning of the game is now a mildly quick fight. I haven't attempted a Platinum trophy on anything in a while, so this is pretty fun.

Various Dreamcast games - Not really playing most of them a lot...Mostly just popping them in for 30-60 minutes so I can refresh my memory on what they're like before adding 'em to the "ranked by preference" list. Though, I would like to give Shenmue another go...Every time I start it, I get side tracked and never end it.

I never played the XBOX edition, but I have heard from numerous sources that this game is bonerifically fun. So looking forward to it.

Also, my lovely dovely wife got me a copy of Nanashi no Game: Me, the sequel to the hit Japanese DS horror game Nanashi-no-Game, which I actually haven't played yet. So far, though, Nanashi Me is totally, totally awesome.

Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean (Gamecube) - I've always liked this game, but this is one of the many games that I started, enjoyed, but for some reason or another never finished. So, while picking out random games to add to my Gamecube 'ranked by preference' list, I noticed this (and a few others, actually) game and decided to finish it now. It had been so long since I played, I couldn't confidently comment on it in my list, anyway. I've gotta say, the voice acting is still among the absolute worst that I've heard before in a video game. Thankfully, everything else is really well done.

NHL '13 (Playstation 3) - My friends got a copy and we've been going through season mode with us all on the same team. It's quite a fun game. I'm mostly just playing the role of the "lane clearer" as I'm just knocking down anyone in the way of my friends as they try to shoot the puck....But honestly, that's half of the fun for me. I can't comment too much else on it, since I haven't really explored what the game all has to offer. But, from what I've played, I'm enjoying it.

Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut (Playstation 3) - Still playing it. Still enjoying it. Spending a lot of time completing side quests -- I largely ignored them during my Xbox 360 playthrough years ago. I'm going for 100% completion this time. I really hope that more people play and enjoy this game. I'd love to see a sequel, prequel...anything. It's not perfect, but that doesn't make it any less enjoyable.

Completed The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past on the good old SNES last night after not touching the game for over a decade. Still awesome as ever - and extraordinary for an early gen game - but for some damn reason I can't give it a 10 out 10. Before I started playing I was thinking "oh, I am going to be able to slap a 10 out of ten on this puppy - no question" but I just can't do it. There is NOTHING wrong with the game (aside from the fact the light world section is kind of like child's play) but I can only give it a 8 out of 10. I just can't explain it. The only thing I can really say is I probably need to play more/other Zelda games for some more context.

And I just started up X-Men Destiny on the PS3. The Angry Joe review on YouTube got me interested in this one. He gave it a 6 out of 10 and I can see where he's coming from. The gameplay is really from a bygone era (that doesn't make it bad but it doesn't make it good) but I really do enjoy the world the game takes place in so far. I'm not really the biggest X-Men fan (okay, I do own the X-Men Evolution DVDs) but I really do like how the X-Men pop in and out and interact with your character. It's far from great but I'm glad I didn't let the review scores scare me off of this one. However, but the same token, I can't imagine paying full price for this thing... it's clearly not worth $60 bones.
