Game Soundtracks You Like

ape 13 years, 11 months ago at Jun 1 10:28 -
Over the next few months, I'm planning on trying to launch a podcast to go along with a re-launch of my little hobby website. The podcast will basically be just video game music. Now, me doing this project isn't set in stone and depends on how much cash I can afford to put into getting (or ripping them from the games themselves, if need be) soundtracks, getting a good microphone, and obtaining editing software...not to mention how much free time I'll be able to spare to make it. But as of right now, I'm hoping to have a podcast going by the end of the year.

That being said...I'm curious as to what game soundtracks the folks here at Listal like. Whether you think the music itself is awesome or it just gives you a nice, warm, nostalgic tingle when you hear it, I'd like to get an idea what others would like to hear. I'll try my best to get ahold of the soundtracks mentioned, and if this podcast does actually end up seeing the light of day, I'll make the first one filled with whatever suggestions I receive here.

As for me, I'll just list one for now (but I'll post others if people show any interest in this thread and/or project of mine)...Because it's bizarre and has been stuck in my head for days now - the soundtrack from the Playstation 2 game, Chulip. I like anything that's strange...And this soundtrack fits that description pretty well.

That's sounds like an awesome thing to do! I'm crossing my fingers that it will work out. :D

I love the Assassin's Creed Soundrack because it accounts for half of the atmosphrere of the game, the same principle goes for Portal 2. The Soundtrack may sound strange when listening to it just like that but it adds up wonderfully to the game.
Some other OSTs I love are the one from Canis Canem Edit and Halo 3/Halo Reach.
Those match the their game universe but are still even better to listen to without playing the actual game.
Oh, and another soundtrack that comes to my mind is that of ร”kami. The game's something unqique and the japanese music is such an enrichment. But still it let's one become kinda melancholic at times.

Okay, sorry for the spam. :P So much came to my mind right now so I needed to share it, even if I cannot always put my adoration for those soundtracks in words or reason it properly ;)
ape 13 years, 11 months ago at Jun 1 12:00 -
Hehe no worries, it's not spam. I asked for it. If you can think of others, feel free to add 'em.

In the meantime, I've taken note of those games and I'll be looking for their soundtracks (although I might have Okami's OST on a hard drive somewhere...but I can't remember).

And since I responded, I suppose I should add another soundtrack I like...So, I'll go with the NES/Famicom classic - Super Mario Bros. Mostly for nostalgic reasons...And because there aren't many other video game soundtracks that even people who have never touched a video game controller can recognize...But this was one of 'em for quite a while...Still might be. Not sure if the young'uns these days are familiar with 8-bit, 2D Mario since they've got their fancy, newfangled consoles....

I can follow this up with a "back in my day" story if need be.

I like this! Here are some game soundtracks that are still awesome in my book:

Beyond Good & Evil (free for download at Ubisoft!)
Radiata Stories
Streets of Rage 2 ("Never Return Alive" is my favorite boss song of all time)
Sonic the Hedgehog
Intelligent Qube
Shadow of the Colossus
Crash Bandicoot
Final Fantasy VII
Tetris theme song

I can attest that the Ookami and Ookamiden soundtracks will cost you an arm and a leg if you buy real copies from Japan. Might wish to consider ripping those ones instead to save on costs.

alrighty...bit of an update. downloading the portal 2 soundtrack as i type this. it's actually free to download from their website at...

www.thinkwithportals.com/music.php

if anyone is interested.

still working on getting some of your other suggestions, kami-chan.

mr. astro man, i've got streets of rage 2, sonic the hedgehog, and final fantasy vii already. also currently downloading the beyond good and evil soundtrack...which, i'll give the link address to, like i did with portal for anyone wanting it...

beyond-good-and-evil.ubi.com/beyond-good-and-evil-hd/en-US/photography/goodies/index.aspx

i believe i also have tetris music, but i'll have to look.

the others, i'll keep an eye out for. if i come up empty, there's still a chance i can rip it from the game, so i'll do my best to get this stuff.

if you guys can think of any others, or if anyone else reading this can think of stuff they like, feel free to post it and let me know.

Excuse the shameless self-promotion, ape, but I've got a few of my favourite soundtracks wrapped up in a list:

www.listal.com/list/favourite-game-soundtracks

Not many have impressed me since Assassin's Creed II, I'll have to keep an ear out. Good luck with the endeavour.
astro_man23 13 years, 11 months ago at Jun 4 18:25 -
The SOTC and ICO soundtracks aren't too expensive, like $10 or less for each on eBay. Worth having, imo. Forgot to mention two more games: The World Ends With You and Indigo Prophecy (Fahrenheit). Btw, how are you finding these soundtracks if you don't mind me asking?
ape 13 years, 11 months ago at Jun 4 20:27 -
At least it's shameless and not shameful. :) And I like how you listed your favorite tracks, too. The YouTube links you've got on there can actually help me get those individual songs at the very least, if I don't have the full soundtrack, as I can rip 'em from the videos. If I can get this project up and running, I'll try working some of those specific songs you have listed first since it won't require me to pick and choose myself. Yes, I'm lazy hehe.

Any time. I also have all of those soundtracks on MP3 myself, so if you need me to send them somewhere, I'd be happy to help!
ape 13 years, 11 months ago at Jun 4 22:35 -
Astro Man, I delayed so long on responding to Grand Assault that I completely missed your post. I generally get the soundtracks by either searching the web to look for deals, finding communities that rip soundtracks for games that never got a commercially released soundtrack, or just plain ripping 'em myself. I'm not the best at ripping music...Actually, I'm horrible at it and it takes me forever to do...But if it comes down to it, I'll do what I've gotta do. I haven't done it yet, but I can also rip music from YouTube videos if I need to...But I'd rather do that as a last resort, too.

And Grand Assault, as this podcast dealie gets closer to being a reality, I might take you up on that offer. :) But for now, I can look around and see if I can find anything. Thanks for the offer.

Alright. This podcast thing may happen sooner than expected. It's a little more simple than I expected, yet also a tad more complicated. But anyway, I downloaded a trial podcast software just to get a feel as to how putting this together will work...And I ended up recording a show that was a little over an hour and twenty minutes long....A very, VERY unprofessional show with no preparation, and me kind of experimenting with stuff to see how it worked. At least, that's how I felt when I was making it. Right now the file is being exported to .mp3 format and I'll take a listen at work later today/tomorrow to see if it's bad as I think...Which it's probably worse hehe.

But anyway, if I feel it's passable, and if the exported file size isn't ridiculous, I may post it as an example of what I'm basically aiming for when I actually come at this from a professional angle, planning out the content, actually caring about volume levels, and not having allergic reactions to springtime pollen, which probably caused a couple sniffles to be heard during the segues between song blocks.

So, yup. Still a ways to go if I plan on doing this in a professional manner, but if I can get used to this software, continue to increase the size of my soundtrack collection, and plan out a basic template for me to follow for future episodes, I may actually be able to start doing these within a few weeks rather than months.

So, that's my little update on this. If I can't get this experimental podcast up due to the file size and/or my dislike of the quality, I'll try to quickly churn out a short, "mini podcast" for folks to download instead. That way it won't feel like as much of a tease. :)

Anyway, to the three of you who showed interest in this, and to anyone else who may read this later on and show interest, I thank you. I'm just doing this 'cause I think it'd be a fun little hobby to do, but having positive support from people always feels nice.

*EDIT* I'll attempt at re-doing the whole "first" podcast tomorrow night after work...Just had a listen and the beginning is just one, big scrambled up mess...But, as the show went on, everything became nicer and nicer....But still not very professional. If my day at work is slow, maybe I'll plan out a show and see where that gets me. I'll try to get a "pilot" episode of the podcast out by the end of the week and available for download (if anyone is interested)...It still won't be extremely professional, since I don't have a great microphone and all that, but hopefully it'll be serviceable.

There are lots of remixes (metal, rock) at Dwelling of Duels for older games for the NES and SNES, etc. Also, some good stuff can also be had at newgrounds.com for more techno and such.

As for soundtracks, the Guilty Gear series, Ar Tonelico 2, Elebits, and Melty Blood series all have pretty good stuff in them. You also can't go wrong with most of the Final Fantasy soundtracks.
ape 13 years, 10 months ago at Jun 24 7:14 -
Miss Valkyrie, ma'am, I'm keeping an eye out for the soundtracks you mentioned. I'll do my best to track 'em down.

As for the podcast, I said about two weeks ago that I'd have a trial recording up. I lied hehe. I do have a trial recording finalized, but I'm not happy with it. Granted, I'm one of those folks who's never really happy with his own work...But, I feel like I can do better...Plus, I was using a trial version of a software that inserted a "this was recorded on the trial version of this software" message over the music every couple minutes. Sooooo, with some luck, this podcast will have a downloadable trial run very soon. I just need the moolah to purchase the license for the software I'm using and the time to sit down and re-record everything, and I'll be all set.

Until then, if you folks can think of any more, please add 'em to the list here and if anyone reading this who hasn't responded yet, then please feel free to toss your two cents in.

Kami 13 years, 10 months ago at Jun 29 17:16 -
Looking forward to the trial run :)

Btw, if you don't have any luck with Okami-Soundtrack i could send'em to you somehow. (Although I don't even know if mine's complete since there are so many tracks :O)
ape 13 years, 10 months ago at Jul 13 13:20 -
Thanks, Miss Kami-chan, but I've gotten a copy of the Okami soundtrack already. Not the official one, but a game rip. Until I can find a deal on the official soundtrack, it should be decent enough to use. Thanks for the offer, though. :)

Hey ape, how's your project coming along?

I loved the Zombies Ate My Neighbors soundtrack, although Final Fantasy X and Castlevania: SOTN were great also.

Hey ape, how's your project coming along?

I'm hoping to have one up within the next month or so. Had some website issues (which was a major reason I wanted to make a podcast - for the site) but they're in the process of being fixed. Now, I just need to pull some money together and either purchase the program I'm currently using the trial version of (it inserts a message every few minutes over whatever audio I recorded until I buy the full version) or find an equally good, free program to use. Once I get the program, and a little free time, I'll have the initial podcast up. After that, I'll probably wait and get some feedback from you fine folks about how I did, make changes if necessary, and then roll on into making it a weekly thing and try to get it on iTunes and that kinda stuff.

Oh, and in case anyone cares, the planned run-time for each podcast is going to be about 90 minutes...But I may bump it up to 120 depending on file size, etc. Yup, I'm going all-out.
