The original Warcraft: Orcs and Humans.
That game was something else back in the day. I loved the cheat codes in it as well.

Does Turn-based stratgy count? If so my first was Frie Emblem, and it's still one of my favorites.
I've been meaning to get into RTSs actually.

^^ Populous on the Mega Drive for me!
Followed closely by the original Command and Conquer, which I happened to think was one of the most bloody and hyper-realistic games of all time back then. I was about ten years old.

I'm not sure which came first, but 1 of these:
* HoMM 3 (I played 2 afterwards, but couldn't get used to it)
* Age of Empires
* Warcraft II (I think).

Command & Conquer: Red Alert. Still one the best strategic games ever made.

I actually summed up my old school Strategy days in a list, coincidentally - presented here.
Pretty much encompasses what you guys have mentioned with a few SNES classics. Did anyone used to play Star Command? It isn't Toy Story related! I think I might be the only one who enjoyed that space embargo!

Shining Force, but if turn based strategy games don't count in this thread then it would be Age Of Empires II.

Can't remember the name, but it was some turn-based space colonization thing on PC. Might've been Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

my first strategy game that I played was Rainbow six for Playstation 1, but I would say that the real strategy game that gave more of a challenge was Ghost recon for original X-box.

I think I'd have to go with Final Fantasy Tactics. Great game but I'm always hesitant to replay it because it requires such a hefty time commitment and I don't know if I'd have the attention span these days.
Actually I have a hard time replaying many games (a lot of them being rpgs) because unlike my erroneous way of thinking in my youth you don't always get more bang for your buck out of a longer game. Sometimes I like games being short and sweet.
