santos11 18 years, 6 months ago at Oct 15 21:32 -
Far and away my fave is Death Cab for Cutie.
santos11 18 years, 5 months ago at Nov 9 21:41 -
Hmm, I also like The Shins, Bright Eyes, and most of all Elliott Smith *swoon*

Neutral Milk Hotel is another one to check out. They've got a little bit of a folk sound.

I think the most consistent indie band of the past ten years is probably Super Furry Animals.

Maybe The Shins...

Two of my favourite bands are Rasputina and The Dresden Dolls (I think they're still classed as indie even though they were signed by Roadrunner). I don't really pay much attention to genres of music, though if anyone asked what those bands were I say cello rock and punk cabaret respectively. :P

I like Rasputina too (it all started when I first heard her version of "You don't own me"), but for a favorite I'd probably choose a Japanese hardcore punk band like Gauze or G.I.S.M.

Oh, and I also like The Residents. They rock. I'm not sure if they'd be considered indie though.

And, there's also Freak Kitchen and Bumblefoot (but Bumblefoot is now with the 'roses so I guess that doesn't count).

Looks like we'll have to define "indie" bands.
tartan_skirt 18 years ago at Apr 17 13:57 -
I cringed inside when I saw Fallout Boy (along with the others).

From Wikipedia:

"In popular music, indie music (from independent) is any of a number of genres, scenes, subcultures and stylistic and cultural attributes, characterised by perceived independence from commercial pop music and mainstream culture and an autonomous, do-it-yourself (DIY) approach."

well she says the killers is not an indie song
tartan_skirt 18 years ago at Apr 18 16:49 -
"well she says the killers is not an indie song"

No, they are not an indie song.

You might not have noticed, but while the Killers are still somewhat considered indie, and I believe they may still be on an indie label, but their music has become rather mainstream. A lot of the other bands that have been posted in this topic are not at that level of fame, which is some people's definition of indie. The same goes for Snow Patrol, but as far as I know Fall Out Boy aren't considered indie at all.

The terms of what indie actually is are hard to define and some people do have different views. Don't lash out because of something you don't know. That was way too hash a comment and I think you should reconsider the way you respond to people in the future. ¬_¬

Upon viewing two threads on these forums I have quickly concluded that kez125 is not only the worst member I've seen on the whole of listal, but also one of the lowest forms of life I have ever witnessed on the planet.

That's quite the insult you know, considering I'm a microbial scientist!

Maps and Atlases are one of my favourite indie bands. They're the only band I can think of at the moment that fit the 'indie' tag, it just seems to be saturated with any band that plays guitar driven music these days.

my favorite indie band is the shaky hands and spoon, just sayin

It's probably a song, a band, an album, a record label, and a baby boy. Parents are cooking up some awfully eccentric names these days. :/

I sort of liked Tapeworm up until I heard they split up. :p
robelanator 17 years, 8 months ago at Aug 27 19:09 -
Well, The Ditty Bops have fulfulled their 2-album contract with Warner Bros and have now gone indy. They'll be recording on their own label from now on... which means I can pimp them in this thread without being off-topic! ;-)

Seriously, though, check them out if you have any interest in folksy swing music. You can stream all the tracks from their first two albums on their website, even. Fun stuff.

My favorite is Grand Serenade, but you've never heard of them.

I like the Postal Service, the Rocket Summer (would he be considered indie?), and Bright Eyes (would they be considered indie?). Oh, and Elliot Smith.

Now that I think about it.....I'd consider the Velvet Underground and Public Image Limited indie. And the Stone Roses. Would grunge have been considered indie at the time? If so, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Mudhoney, the Melvins, and pretty much every band who was ever on Sub Pop.
Vix 17 years, 8 months ago at Aug 28 9:48 -
If Rilo Kiley are still considered indie then they're one of my favorites. And The Black Keys too.

@robelanator: The Ditty Bops rule. It's like listening to 30s jive music played on a guitar - if that makes sense!

My chem, Death Cab For A Cutie, 30 seconds to mars but thats more indie rock Id say =]
