Favorite French Movies

johnny obelisk 15 years, 8 months ago at Aug 15 23:14 -
If you've read my profile you'll know that I don'tclaim to be a film expert, but I do enjoy a good movie. Recently, I started watching foreign movies. French seem to be my favorite. ("I like the way they think"--A.D.) Here's a few of my favs. Any suggestions would be great.

1. Amelie
2. City of Lost Children
3. Cache
4. Three Colors: Blue

I adored Amelie and Cache. The Beat My Heart Skipped is another French movie I watched, and while it wasn't oscar-worthy, it was a pretty good thriller. Interesting, nonetheless.

My favorite French movie is The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (Le Scaphandre et le Papillon). This movie is from Belgium, but they speak French in it. It won the Palme D'Or - it's called L'Enfant. Right now I'm waiting on Le Conte de Noel and Entre Les Murs to come to the United States...

Persepolis is great too.
johnny obelisk 15 years, 8 months ago at Aug 15 23:21 -
OKay, yeah, I just saw that one. I thought it was in French, but I wasn't sure if it was a "French" movie. It was good but profoundly sad.

Have you seen Delicatessen?

Wait...which one did you see?

And yes, I've seen Delicatessen. Have you seen it/did you enjoy it?
johnny obelisk 15 years, 8 months ago at Aug 16 3:00 -
i did see it, and liked it enough to purchase it. i really like jean-pierre jeunet. but i think amelie is his best so far.

I agree. Amélie is better rounded - Delicatessen was more just...a fun kind of film. Plus I found the characters in Amélie so much more likeable.
johnny obelisk 15 years, 8 months ago at Aug 16 4:49 -
yea, i totally agree. I think I like Amelie 'cause, i dunno... i kinda feel like i can relate to her general place in life. I feel the same about Lost in Translation. (not French... sorry)

I love Lost in Translation - a little off-topic, but I definitely think there must be some sort of relatable character for me to give something a 5-star rating, French or not.

I'm a big fan of the Taxi series and really enjoyed Les Chevaliers du Ciel
johnny obelisk 15 years, 8 months ago at Aug 16 14:35 -

Oh, I forgot the Discreet Charm of the Bourgeosie - a brilliant French satire.

Paris Je T'Aime is another one - but I only enjoyed about half of the short films. It's worth renting, however.
Rafikz 15 years, 8 months ago at Aug 17 3:31 -
Léon
Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain
Nuit et brouillard
La Jetée
La Règle du jeu
À bout de souffle
Vivre sa vie: Film en douze tableaux
La Chinoise
Les Quatre cents coups
Jules et Jim

and so on.

I love Cache as well, and the whole Three Colors trilogy.

A little older, but Diary of a Country Priest is thoughtful and sad as well (plus you can see it in a wonderful Criterion edition).

Irréversible without a doubt.

Angel-A, Un Coeur en Hiver, Sitcom, Beautiful People, The Double Life of Veronique, all of the Trois Couleurs films, A Very Long Engagement, 13 Tzameti, and Alphaville. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few, though.

I'll further reinforce Amelie, Delicatessen, Irreversible, Cache, and Leon.

It's been awhile since I've seen them, but I recall liking Romance, Don't Let Me Die on a Sunday, and La Belle Noiseuse, too.

Surprised there's been no mention of La Haine yet, an excellent film. Watched Delicatessen recently and thought it pretty average overall but in parts had some inspired film-making. Got Irreversible at the top of my lovefilm rentals list so will be watching that soon.

Escafeld: I can't speak for anyone else, but a big part of why I have a fondness for Delicatessen is that it was one of the first foreign films I ever saw and contributed a lot towards my tastes moving outside the mainstream. Looking at it now, it's a little quaint in some respects, even dated, but I still appreciate it. Overall, I think it's stronger than City of Lost Children, but that's another debate entirely :p

I've heard great things about La Haine, but keep putting off renting it.
