Eurovision 2007

tartan_skirt 17 years ago at May 9 18:44 -
Eurovision broadcasts live this Saturday, so come on... admit it! You're going to watch it! :P

After last year's competition I'm quite hopeful that it's going to be an interesting show, although the British attempt is laughable as usual. I've not looked at many of the contestants yet because I want them to remain a surprise, but I've seen the odd clip here and there.

Anyone have thoughts on any acts, past years, or anything related?

-blank stare- What's this?

:O If you are serious I might have a heart attack... though I suppose anyone outside Europe can be forgiven. :P (Even though it is broadcast over there and in lots of other places besides.)

Eurovision is an annual music programme, in which lots of European countries enter a musical act, often dreadful, to compete with the rest on a European-wide scale. Here is the Wikipedia page.

Historically, it's been most well known for bands like Abba and Lulu *shudders*, but last year's winners were Lordi, the Finnish hard rock band who dress like monsters! :P Now THAT was amazingly un-Eurovision, yet still inkeeping will the general style-challenged acts of it all. :P

You should look it up, it is fantastic to watch at times and we're even having a small Eurovision/end of school gathering to laugh at it. :P

Just think of it as like American Idol, only waay cooler cause it's European. I've heard some stuff about it; people griping about voting issues or something.

I'd honestly never heard of it before... might have to see if it's airing anywhere 'round here. It's a shame I don't have satellite.

Erm... not quite. We have our own versions of that show in different countries, whereas Eurovision is very different as they don't just audition people off the streets all the time. Bands are selected to go into a country final and then voted for within the country, then they go to Eurovision in the country it is being hosted (this year it is Finland).

As for the voting, there does seem to be a lot of political alliances, which is quite funny to watch as our commentator does like to point it out a lot. :P (Plus he gets gradually drunk...)

Wow.. Just like Paula Abdul!... She starts the season out mildly coherent... by the end, she's giggling a lot, slurring a little and generally incomprehensible.

I find Eurovision absolutely hilarious and highly entertaining. The thing is though I don't go looking out for it and I never see ads for it on telly so when I see it, it's just because I've come across it by accident. I swear it is...

I never even knew roughly what time of the year it was. It's around about the same time each year isn't it?

I am looking forward to this quite a lot. After Lordi winning perhaps any nonsense is possible. Always a fun, silly evening. Living in Australia I am not eligible to vote :(

:( Israel got knocked out in the semi-finals. They were awesome... Damn restrictions on numbers!

Oh well, 45 minutes until it starts!

Haven't watched it in years, but ended up watching with the housemates. Right about Israel - far better than most of the stuff on there. Ukraine were robbed, Russia were quite good for a laugh and Serbia didn't deserve to finish anywhere near as high. France's mad pink bloke with a cat on his shoulder was entertaining even if the music was... er... bad, quite amused by Greece's attempt to fuse Latino music with Bollywood (badly). Plenty of offkey singing too. Next time I watch it I'm getting much more drunk.

lol, well I enjoyed it so much I did a review on it. I was quite surprised at our announcer not getting drunk!

I was slightly scared of the Ukranian entry, to be truthful. I thought the Earth was under attack... It was great when Russia got booed whenever they got a 12 points. :P

Actually, the best bit for me was naming the genre of each band. "Cello Rock", "BollyRock" (a Bollywood/Rock crossover) and "Gypsy Pop" were amongst my favourites.

Suspect Russia's lyrics didn't go down too well along with some of the block voting.

Oh! Hey, is Eurovision '07 on BBC? Is this why Doctor Who is skipping a week?

You've never heard of cello rock? Thats one of my favourite types of music! Seriously I was amazed by the appearance of Apocalyptica, that was a completely fantastic performance. (Cello rock bands are few and far between though, other than them there is Rasputina and the String Quartet Tribute which I know of and probably only a few others that are well known. This is annoying for me trying to find good music.) Just be thankful you didn't have to get into genres like Gypsy Carbaret. ;)

lol, yes we displaced your show! It's a small sacrifice to make. :P

Never. Although it doesn't surprise me it exists. I did want to see Israel tho. We had a great, if slightly non-PC, name for him :o(

Now that the Eastern European countries are so plentiful, it is hard to see a west european or team from Britain or Ireland ever winning again. Those two where really hard done by. The song from Serbia was wonderful, but not the best, Ukraine's I loved that was just so mad. Those Russian schoolgirls where really awful, but Russia has a lot of friends. The voting system is too perocial and exposes old rifts and rivalries which is a little defeatist. Another funny moment was when the 12 point from Cyprus was announced and the whole audience shouted out in unison GREECE! It's that cynical

Take it back to a jury system
