Editing manual database entries

CaveatVideot 17 years ago at Apr 27 11:32 -
I understand that there is a minimum point number I have to reach before I can edit database/amazon-sourced entries. This will take quite a while at the rate points are given (I do not usually invite all my friends to join "my" sites, sorry).
But since I am not in an english-language country, most of my entries will be manual entries. Also, amazon sometimes has just crappy data. I just saw that I lose the right to edit those the moment I enter them into the database. OK, I can review them carefully before posting, but still, I think at least for those items there should be a way to edit them, because: Who, other than me, will bother to correct them (unless there will be a massive surge of users from my country in the near future)...
Opinions? :-)

There is an option to edit an item once it has been uploaded into the database. On the item page, in the blue box on the right hand side under Actions is the option to Edit Item. You can see the history of edits this way also... Unless this is a point specific feature too?
CaveatVideot 17 years ago at Apr 27 12:06 -
It is. When I try to edit this item for example: www.listal.com/dvd/das-boot-174214 , of which I am the only owner, I get this: "You do not have enough points to edit items yet, you must have at least 5000 points"

Edited to add: The above is an example of crappy data: Look at the names of the actors. Well, looks like a "combine names" feature is needed, so that the variants can be pulled together. The main entry for "Jรผrgen Prochnow" is "Jurgen Prochnow" right now (*shudder*).

There's a similar recent thread dealing with some of the pros and cons that might be helpful:

Editing Missing Details (the "Deleted" gentleman making some of the smart points is Thilian, case you're wondering)

The 5000 point thing irked me too when I joined, but it really doesn't take that long to get to 5000 points if you really get to it. You get points from rating, tagging, reviews, uploading images & videos on the item and artist pages, posting on the forums, favorite lists etc. Just a little patience that's all.

Thanks. The points that weren't smart were downright pissy, tho'.

I agree about Amazon, but what do you mean you lose the right to edit them? They don't disappear from the Listal database once imported - members can't delete entries yet and when this becomes available it might have to be selectively distributed. You can delete items from your collection by viewing your list of Owned and checking said item, scrolling down to With selected perform action (bottom-left, under the Next to Previous navigation bar), selecting "Delete" and clicking "Go".
Who, other than me, will bother to correct them

No one. You're our last hope. But you have one thing straight: the quality and betterment of the site is more important than striving aimlessly for points. You can combine different ways of helping out into one. If you add an item to your collection or a list or review it, add the picture for the time being. Later you can go back and make sure the criteria is accurate. See some of my lists and look over the items entailed and you'll see what I mean. Do what you can for now, but be patient for your training is not yet complete.

50 points a thump for personal information. 100 points a hit for favorites lists. 3 points every time you bang out a rating or tag... And you're scoring 4 points with every forum post. Add an avatar for 10 smackers!

I meant the data of items I added manually, by reading it off the back of the box or researching the info on amazon.de or elsewhere on the Net and typing it in/copy-paste it to the fields. Once I hit "save"/"continue" the 5000 point rule is applied and I cannot go back to edit the item to even correct a typo (even though I was the one entering it and am the only one to own it). I do see the point in not allowing direct editing of Amazon data, though (even though it is only partly reliable for German items, because of all the pesky Umlauts**, and because they tend to stuff all kinds of info into title lines).

:-P Bl-bl-bl-bl! ;-)
Well, I am up to 146 points after adding 15 items. Lessee...

Thanks to everyone, and off to check out the other thread.

** I know these are an issue for most applications, so I am patient ;-). I might get support from the French ;-).

I've altered it so if you are the original submitter of the item you can edit regardless of your points.
CaveatVideot 17 years ago at Apr 27 17:24 -
Hey, excellent, thank you so much, Tom! :-)
Now I just might go back, delete "Das Boot" from my list and manually reenter it with all the Umlauts in place... --yeah, I know, OCD and all that... :-D
Edited to add for anyone's information:
The following fields are now editable for the original submitter:
Title
Studio
DVD region
Movie duration
Theatrical release
No. of discs
Release date
Description

On second thought: Is there a reason you excepted the name fields (director, actors) and EAN from editing? Just asking -- if you say "That's how it is now!", I will be content :-).
Back to entering more DVDs...

The plan is to associate a dvd with a imdb entry, so the cast list will be inherited from there instead

So

www.listal.com/dvd/das-boot-174214

Will get the cast list from :

www.listal.com/tv/the-boat-miniseries

I have fixed the cast list in das boot now though
