DVD Storage?

Kimi 17 years, 7 months ago at Oct 5 17:01 -
Wondering how everyone stores their beloved DVDs? Is there any rhyme or reason to how you store the discs? Is storage becoming an issue for you and your collection?
Azathoth 17 years, 7 months ago at Oct 6 1:16 -
My horror DVDs are seperate from the rest as they are the largest part of my collection. They're first arranged by director in order of my favorites by that director. The ones left are just ordered by favorite.
Space is not a problem yet, but with my two DVD racks just about full and no end in sight to my buying more, it soon will be.

Well, let me first say that I keep my DVDs in their proper cases. I don't understand how people can buy a DVD, throw the case away and stick the disks in those media case things.

Currently I have my DVDs separated into two categories: films and TV. Once I get my new shelving [I've outgrown my current space for films] I will put some sort of order in the mix. Alphabetical would be idyllic but possibly by color someday.

All my DVDs are stacked alphabetically by title on shelves - in their original cases. I do have series next to eachother or course.

Mine too - arranged alphabetically. I have 3 shelves.. the first one is for regular sized DVDs.. the 2nd is for the box sets and the 3rd one is for the limited editions in special/customized packaging. :)

I have tried several different way to store/display my DVDs, but I'm using the alphabetical arrangement at the moment. I keep all DVDs in their original cases and I do separate TV from films and special collections from the film section, but it works for me. Living in a small apartment, room has become a definite issue. When Sam Goody went out of business in March, we purchased two of their almost floor to ceiling shelving units and I've already filled both and have three other smaller sleving units filled, as well. My girlfriend and I separate our DVDs as well, so she has two shelving untis, too!

Mine are all over the place. I have regular DVDs seperate from anime, since my anime collection is the largest, followed by my Japanese horror collection.
Hopefully, once I move, I'll be able to have bookcases in my living room specifically for my DVDs.

I keep all of mine in the side of my mouth, much like a hamster, so I always know where they are.

Some people have suggested that in an effort to save space, we place the DVDs in those CD 'books', but I refuse to toss the DVD cases, so I'd still have to store empty DVD cases. I need a house with lots of free space for my DVDs....not an apartment. Maybe if I stopped buying DVDs, I could afford a house, but I don't see an end to my DVD purchases.

I have a lot of discs I "record" (no snipes on pirating - DVD recorders are legal you know). I am getting to the problem point with DVDs. Problem is that I have found some holders that I like, but none of them hold DVD covers well (I have purchased DVDs too you know). I have found a few that hold covers, but expect you to fold them in half, right through the center of the binding label. I would like one that just had a hair more room so I could have the front and binding of the label show, and fold the back behind. Even better would be one that would let me fold the cover, slip it into a sleeve, and have the DVD in the middle. Anyone come across anything like that. Alsop is the best I have found, but not good enough.

I have all mine roughtly A-Z, sometimes the occasional dvd is put slightly out of order but never too far for me not to find.

A friend of mine organises her DVD by colour of the case/spine cover lol.

I have so many, they are in a bookshelf..and where ever they can fit.
robelanator 17 years, 7 months ago at Oct 10 19:16 -
I'm in desperate need of a new shelf lately. The one I have holds about 250 DVDs, but I've outgrown it in the past few months. Now I've got DVD's piled on top of the TV, on the floor, on the ottoman, on the computer, etc.

Ideally I'd first arrange my collection by director if it's an auteur (Scorsese, Hitchcock, Gilliam, De Palma, etc) and I have 3 or more of their films. That would account for nearly 1/3rd of my collection. From the other 2/3rds I'd separate out the westerns, kung fu films, and silents since they're more niche genres. The rest I'd arrange alphabetically, though I'm mulling over spliting those further into classics (pre-1970) and modern (post-1970).

We have a "multimedia" case in our hallway. We're currently trying to replace our VHS with DVDs, which we may not get done any time soon, IYKWIM. They're all in their original cases SUPPOSEDLY by genre. My kiddos don't always put things back where they get them from. lol

My collection of dvd's is still rather small. I'm able to fit all of them in the three drawers under the tv. There are also some shelves available when the drawers get filled up.

Ah man, reading all of this so makes me want to reorganize.
Kimi 17 years, 6 months ago at Oct 14 15:22 -
I used to reorganize on a pretty regular basis, until the last time I did before I had larger shelves and we were up until 3:00AM doing this. I had started around 10:00PM and when my roomie came home from work, she pitched in to help and finally gave up around 2:00AM and left me to finish on my own. Since then, I've stuck with my current organizing scheme.....snappers in alphabetical, keep cases in alphabetical and TV series in alphabetical.
aechris 17 years, 6 months ago at Oct 15 16:09 -
I used to have them on a set of shelves ordered roughly by genre/country but since moving all but a few of them are sitting in boxes in the basement. :(

I'd like to have some sort of shelving system but since I'm away at school they need to be easy to transport so I just have them in a plastic bucket/storage bin.

I keep my dvds(which are all in their cases) in a shelf thing I built myself. I also keep my games and cds in there.
becca85 14 years, 7 months ago at Sep 22 2:39 -
I mostly keep my DVDs in their cases on a regular old bookshelf but, as it is now packed full, I may be looking into something else. Maybe packing the cases away and just buying a bunch of the huge carrying cases and putting my DVDs in them.
Shaun 14 years, 7 months ago at Sep 22 19:38 -
I sort mine by keeping together movies by my favorite stars or directors, all in chronological order. As for my Criterion DVD's I sort them by spine number.

i would like to say i have (out of some people's storage attempts by me) the best and most efficent way to store your DVD's and find them easily. putting them right on your wall!!

You should put a large mirror on that far wall to create the illusion of a bigger collection. But how do you get the irregularly shaped DVD cases (ie. special editions) into this unit? It seems to be a problem for me.
Artemis Panthar 14 years, 7 months ago at Sep 29 22:28 -
I sort my DVDs, in their original cases (although many no longer have their sleeves), in alphabetical order. TV Shows are separate. Unfortunately, I don't have one case big enough for all of it so they're currently spread between three shelves in different rooms.

I used to hang them on the wall with those holders, however they fell down after an earthquake so I no longer bother with them.
becca85 14 years, 7 months ago at Sep 30 15:39 -
That looks awesome pamela voorhees!! I should look into doing that. Except I think I will wait until I have my own permanent residence.
karmacomatic 14 years, 7 months ago at Oct 4 9:37 -
I store them in an IKEA shelf, sorted alphabetically by original title if it's English, German, French or Spanish. For example Scandinavian movies are sorted by their German or English title. The shelf is next to the CD and games shelf.
