Doing a (re)run on PS RPG classics.

Veed 12 years, 4 months ago at Jan 3 18:21 -
I'm back at the videogame fever, but Im a sucker for oldschool quality.

I'm currently playing FFVII which Ive never played before. After that there's FFVIII coming, one of my faves of all time, and after that FFIX which I only completed once.

And I need MOAR SUGGESTINATIONS! Of games to try and get meanwhile if I don't have em.

ape 12 years, 4 months ago at Jan 3 23:58 -
A few RPG suggestions off the top of my head are...

Suikoden
Suikoden II
Grandia
Star Ocean: The Second Story
Legend of Legaia
Legend of Dragoon
Persona 2: Eternal Punishment
Valkyrie Profile
Final Fantasy Tactics
Dragon Warrior VII
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
Lunar: Eternal Blue Complete

...Just be aware that some of those can go for quite a bit of cash. RPG's like to generally sell at higher prices. If you want any more info on those or anything, just let me know and I'll help out however I can.

I remember searching for Legend of Dragoon when I bought FFVII. I have memories of that game from a demo many years ago, and that one was selling for quite a price!

Im gonna have a look into those you mentioned, though Im not particulary interested in DWVII and VP. The others are very possible choices.

ape mentioned a lot of good ones. When I purchased FFVII I really got into RPGs. Grandia and Lunarwere some I bought as follows up. I prefer Grandia. Both feature voice acting, Grandia has better graphics, Lunar is an updated version of a classic Sega CD RPG. I was really attached to Grandia.

I have Legend of Dragoon, it was interesting, I believe it was made by the same people who did Final Fantasy VIII, the combat system is different, you have to hit buttons at certain times to make combos.

A Thousand Arms was another great one I have, and storyline, world map random battles like a regular rpg but the battle is done on a 2D plain, looking kind of like a fighter. Your lead character is in the front and you party is more of an assist. It has been a while since I have played it but it was very fun, voice acting as well and this game has a dating sim built into it. The hero has to get the girls in his party to like him more, I believe this allows for better weapon building.

Persona 2 was a certain favorite of mine, I love the contemporary setting and the battle system has the odd feature of gossip, I think that is what they called it. While you must vanquish your foes you can make deals with your enemies, and eventually summon them or if you ever wind up in a conflict, they just peaceably let you past. To do this you must talk with them. They ask you something, you have to say the most pleasing reply. A lot of fun and funny dialogue is exchanged. Only problem is, random battles are frequent and you really need to level up.

Chrono Cross from Square, sequel to Chrono Trigger, a bit of a feel of a Final Fantasy but it has multiple endings and I think there are up to 30 or more potential party members. It has great replay value.

Koudelka, very good graphics for the system, short game play, intriguing story that continues on PS2.

I can't believe I forgot Chrono Cross. I love that game...I've beaten it enough times to all endings...some more than once. I was obsessed with it when it first came out. I highly recommend it. But if you get it, don't go in expecting a similar experience to Chrono Trigger or you might be disappointed.

To add to SnappySneezer's description of Koudelka, if you want an interesting RPG, that might be a good one to pick up as it's a survival horror game with turn-based fighting system with random battles. And if you get it and like it, the story that continues that SnappySneezer mentioned is found in the Shadow Hearts games.

play FF 6. omg its so good.
SnappySneezer 12 years, 3 months ago at Jan 18 3:12 -
ah yes, that is on the Anthology, I liked it alot too and I missed it on SNES. V was alright but story wise, 6 is streets ahead.

Oh one other thing just popped in my mind. I have a video game, a 3D fighter called Ehrgeiz! God Bless the Ring which features FFVII characters in it, Cloud, Vincent, Yufie, Tifa, RedXIII, Zack and Sephiroth. Also there is a sidequest RPG on the disk.

Im having a blast replaying FFVIII, playing VII and when I'm done with VIII I'll get into IX. I'm also trying to find a nice deal on Anthology, Origins and of course, FF VI!

Btw, I tried to find Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross, but it seems downright impossible to find a PAL copy of any of those games for PS1, never-mind an affordable price...

Btw, has anyone ever played Vagrant Story? That's one oldie from my days back then. It's probably my favorite video-game story EVER and one of the most challenging game-plays that I remember "mastering".
TeamDaiGurren 12 years, 3 months ago at Jan 20 1:47 -
you should play legend of mana :)

European friends, do you think it is worth importing a NTSC PSX system? I've been longing to play stuff like Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross and Xenogears, and I mean, for a LONG time! Mainly because I don't have access to these games in PAL release, as well as stuff like Lunar and Persona.
SnappySneezer 12 years, 3 months ago at Jan 20 20:53 -
might as well get a US PS2 if you go that route, oh I'm from the states.

There are discs that you can use, I believe it is called swap magic but I only see the PS2 version online. Maybe if you dig a bit deeper. These discs load on your game console and then a message comes on screen saying insert your imported game disc. You open it, take the disc out and put the imported disc in, close it and you are good to go. This process is like swapping discs between Final Fantasy VII.

Oh another game came to mind, don't own it but I always wanted to play Rhapsody. It is worth looking into.
Veed 12 years, 3 months ago at Jan 21 5:54 -
Never heard of Rhapsody, but thx for the info, I may consider Swap Magic, but if I can get a nice deal I might as well get me a new imported PS2.

For way over than 200 euros, I made the biggest gaming transaction of my life... now if it's a good one, that's another story.

Apart from the used system, almost ALL of these games are in mint condition or like new, this was the biggest factor in making me spend all this money at once.

This "package" is from a total of 3 sellers. An American (system), an European and an Australian (most mint games came from him, he was selling his collection basically).

Here's what I got:

-PS2 NTSC system
-Final Fantasy Origins
-Final Fantasy Chronicles
-Final Fantasy Anthology
-Chono Cross
-Xenogears
-Valkyre Profile
-Tactic Ogre
-Grandia
-Legend of Dragoon
-Suikoden II

The same seller still had stuff like Breath of Fire 4, Wild Arms, a Thousand Arms, Star Ocean: The Second Story, Vagrant Story (which I have), etc. Those will be for another time xD

No more shopping for me for a while!

I forgot about Wild Arms. I regret selling it. I regret every video game, CD and DVD I ever sold. I hate doing it but you need money sometimes. Wild Arms is a Western RPG.

that's a really good haul...and with all those rpg's you probably won't need to do any shopping for a long while. :)

How about Parasite Eve?
Veed 12 years, 3 months ago at Feb 4 5:32 -
I got almost all of the games with the exception of Valkyre Profile, Tactic Ogre and Grandia which whose transaction was canceled, but I got both Lunar and Lunar 2 boxes in awesome condition. I'm very anxious to try all of these games.

About Parasite Eve, Ive heard good things about it, but it's not the type of game I'm lookg for I guess.
SnappySneezer 12 years, 3 months ago at Feb 4 8:25 -
Aw too bad. I kind of wanna play Grandia right now, the voice over work makes ya feel like you are watching some anime.
Phoenix1745 12 years, 2 months ago at Feb 15 17:55 -
Someone mentioned them already but Wild Arms and Star Ocean were two of my favorites
