What do you think about the Wii U?

I feel a little burned by the wii and 3ds, i'll probably sit this one out.

I'm going to get it and it's line up when it comes out seems better than the 3DS line up at the beginning. One thing I hope about the WiiU that it doesn't get screwed by Nintendo's weird thing on localization on certain games.

Whenever they bring over the next 3D Mario and the possible Banjo-Kazooie successor by ex-Rare workers, it'll be more on my list. 3D platformers are my favorite genre created after the 80s, though with everyone 2D/retro-crazy these days it doesn't seem like developers are willing to explore this style of gaming.

I guess I shouldn't complain too much, as we'll be getting Skylanders Giants and Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two; though, as with the first Skylanders, I'll probably prefer the 3DS version of Giants sos I can jump every now and then. However, Epic Mickey 2 sounds like it's going to fix the issues the original had, and depending on how much of a loss I'll be at without someone else to play as Oswald I may really like it or just like it okay.

Here's the current Wii U launch line-up: Next Stop: Nintendo World Report.

Yeah - Nintendo made a statement a while back that they'd learned their mistake from the 3DS's launch.

It seems like the ported games might be more fun on the Wii U, only if they are done correctly and actually give you a reason to purchase it on the Wii U instead of the other consoles. I think that the second screen, although clever, might be just another gimmick. Sadly though, at the moment, speaking of software, ZombiU is the only title that I am hype about.

I played it acouple of weeks ago at a Gamestop that only had the Rayman Legends demo. The controller felt surprising light and the controls for that one game felt natural, the motion and touch controls work and I have a fun time playing the demo.

I found one on my way home from work Wednesday night/early Thursday morning. I went to Wal-Mart for some pants, walked out with a Wii U. Just now setting it up...and it's a little annoying. I remember buying a console and playing a game within seconds of turning it on...The Wii U has been on for nearly an hour now and I'm stuck waiting for it to download updates before I can do anything with it. It's been out for less than a week...What updates do they have that they couldn't have had pre-installed in the console already?

Anyway, the launch line-up looks solid...Though, in fairness, the launch lineup also mostly consists of games released on other systems...some of them months ago. I took advantage of some Black Friday deals and obtained a decent number of the launch titles, so I'm hoping to have a Wii U version of my ranked by preference lists in the near future.

After the updates finally install and I'm able to actually navigate menus and play games, I'll post more thoughts on the console as a whole. But for now, this installation time is ridiculous.

Update to the previous post. Now that I've devoted nearly a day playing a few of the games (my thoughts on said games can be found here) I feel like I can give a decent opinion on the console so far.

Nearly all of the software I played required an update of some sort, but thankfully you can start the software as the update downloads and the next time you boot up the game, it'll install.

The Wii U controller is a little distracting on some games...Like ZombiU. I find myself looking down at the map on the controller as I navigate rather than my television screen, which takes away from the supposed-to-be-scary atmosphere a bit. But, on other games like Nintendo Land, the game is enhanced by the controller. It kind of makes me afraid of a repeat of the Wii, where Nintendo usually had a decent idea on how to use the motion controls work with a game, but most games from other companies felt hindered by the use of them.

I think the Wii U has potential to do well...But it's still a gimmick system like the Wii was. Similar problems of developers not knowing how to work with making the controller and television work together may haunt the system...But I'd imagine that it's easier to make quality games with two screens (Nintendo DS, 3DS have proven that companies other than Nintendo can make quality games in that format) than it is with motion controls. I also think if shovelware titles stay off the system, it'll have better longevity than its predecessor did...But, I suppose time will tell.

I think it's a solid system, and with backwards compatibility with your Wii games and controllers, it's worth picking up, in my opinion, if for no other reason than you can call it an "upgrade" for your Wii, allowing you to still enjoy the games you may be playing now, but also have the option to pick up any new games that may interest you in the future.

Yeah, I agree with you on the gimmick part, although I think the Wii U's gimmick is better than the Wii's one. I don't like the Wii Remote, or any motion controls. But a gamepad... that's much better since I really like the DS. So, it's gimmick to me, but it's not as bad as the motion controls.

It may split the market again, but this time, not so drastically. I mean, it was hard to make a game made for the PS3/X360 fit into the Wii with it's motion control and lack of buttons. With the gamepad the Wii U may not have the same problems.

But it can go wrong if the next generation of consoles is coming much more powerful than the current generation (Wii U included), since it would split the market again. I don't think it'll happen, but it's possible. Personally, I think Sony and Microsoft are going to copy some of the Wii U ideas and make them better. I think they will launch systems with normal controllers (primarily), but with the possibility of a touch enabled controller or something like that.

I got the Wii U since last week and the only game I have as of now is Nintendo Land. So far from going though the features like Miiverse and some others and from playing the game. It has alot of potential to be interesting while it really depends on the games it gets in the future, and future features to see what happens. As long there are not too many "Ninja Breadman" type games in it's market, it could work.
