Do you care about the ranking?

El Raulo 13 years, 7 months ago at Oct 4 5:12 -
Since I have noticed most of the users I like and follow do not have a high ranking in Listal (with just one or two exception) I started thinking and I decided ranking is irrelevant. What do you thing about it?
In my case, I decided just to make lists when I feel the need, I won't make any easy points winner lists, and not to care anymore if my ranking keeps going lower.

That's how I feel about it. I make lists I like and don't care about the number. It's not a popularity contest, it's about sharing my passions or observations with others.
Xanadon't 13 years, 7 months ago at Oct 4 6:57 -
Easy for you guys to say. You're top 160 :(

Haha, just kidding, listal is 100% fun! I love the fact that I know a good number of the members by name, and several others by awesomeness.
El Raulo 13 years, 7 months ago at Oct 4 16:49 -
It's not a big deal, xanadon't. For example, you have some great lists and not a high ranking. Anyway you have a great number of followers

Rank doesn't really matter.

Don't get me wrong, I'm gutted I'm going down the ranks so very fast, despite putting in a lot of Mod work, I hit 40 then down to 54, 55, 56, 57... But its for a good cause and if I end up ranked 99999 and Listal is back to the high standard it was when I first joined, I'll be very happy indeed!

I do miss the global battles to create a masterpiece!
Veed 13 years, 7 months ago at Oct 5 18:18 -
tersanay nailed it. Although I wouldn't like a very low ranking, it wouldn't reflect my activeness on the site.
John E. 13 years, 7 months ago at Oct 12 1:09 -
I'll be honest I used to care about the rank and I was in the top 100 at somepoint but I've been too busy to care about it now.
The Critic 13 years, 6 months ago at Oct 27 0:56 -
Its funny how you guys say its not important while you are like on the top 300. Look at my rank. I actually DO care about my rank. I will work very hard to go on top 1 hundred.

You may find, after you contribute more to the site and become more active that it's not about the number. It's about forming relationships and feeling like you are part of creating something with others. There will always be those that do care and there's nothing wrong with that. I definately cared about rank at first because I thought my low rank looked bad, but now I know that I contribute my own unique ideas and passions to the site.

Good point. The ranking system is a good way to make people productive when they first join the site, until they find that they like the community and enjoy contributing to it.

I couldn't care less about the ranking. It's pointless. You don't prove anything just by being number 1.As far as I know, you can get a huge amount of points just by adding pictures to actors or actresses, which isn't considered as any serious contribution to the community.
El Raulo 13 years, 6 months ago at Oct 30 21:45 -
Exactly. Look at the members number 1,2,3 and 4. They didn't make any real contribution. Just posted a lot of images which are almost the same. I insist, the best users are not in the listal podium.

*Hides in a bunker until Bael and Prelude are done exercising pure mod brutality on Raulo.*

EDIT: Whoa. I just checked the rankings again and it seems they've changed. Did this just happen or what? I checked a couple minutes ago and it Prelude was in the top four, while Helwender wasn't anywhere near.

The rankings are ludicrous because the points you get for making genuine contributions to listal are an absolute pittance compared to what you can generate by spamming the site with images and tags.

I could write a 20 word review (which itself would be spam) for 50 points, or I could copy-and-paste 20 synonyms for a word as tags into something for 60 points. As listal has grown, the only evolution the entire site has undergone is the increase in number of votes required for list promotion :/

I mean Jesus, I must have added hundreds of music albums to the listal database and you don't even receive anything for that.
tommyv 13 years, 6 months ago at Oct 31 4:48 -
Completely agree with Flagship and Raulo, all someone needs to is have a bot load several hundred images everyday and poof all of a sudden they are the leader. Oh look at that pic she moved her hand two inches from the previous pic! Personally I love the ones where it is a small pic and then the next one is just a little bigger than the previous! By actually adding actors or albums or movies, etc... to the database you improve the site.

Nothing in this world is perfect so I'll ignore the standings and just try to enjoy the little things I come here for.
tommyv 13 years, 6 months ago at Oct 31 5:02 -
Here is an example of a point whore:

There were more of the exact same but you get the idea. All four there are pretty much exactly the same pic, why do we need 4 pics of the same dumb ass image?
tommyv 13 years, 6 months ago at Oct 31 5:11 -
Another example of a point whore:

same pic just zoomed differently

and another example

different zoom level

It is not that interesting do we need a close up? They are exactly the same if you compare the images and look at the woman just to Miranda's side she is in the same spot in the images. I think it is just the points! And I will gladly give back whatever points I got for posting to this thread!

Already a judgement on red carpet photos, just one allowed, no slight changes. Would hope the same applies here, also advertising logo bottom right!

On the last set Image 2 is a duplicate of 1st, 4th image a duplicate of 3rd, so two will be pulled - if you report any like this that you see, Mods will get them removed.

Obviously we'd prefer members about to post such images to show a bit of restraint - saves us Mods a lot of work.
Moderator
tersanay 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 1 1:18 -
So, as someone who isn't afraid to report pictures, how exactly would that work? They aren't actually duplicates if they are slightly different. For example, Nina Dobrev and Taylor Swift both have what I consider to be a ridiculous amount of pictures on their profiles. Would you take the first pic as the original and report all that show that same outfit from the same angle? And what about photoshoots where people have uploaded a hundred versions of essentially the same picture?

And, has anyone brought this change in rules to the attention of those people who do this the most? It would be easiest if they would just stop doing it.
tommyv 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 1 11:46 -
Yes there you go, get the point whore to stop being whores!!??

It needs to be easier to report it as a duplicate.
Moderator
tersanay 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 1 14:19 -
Not to mention the fact that for some person profiles there are going to be hundreds and that just takes up precious mod time. I'd prefer smut deletion over duplicate deletion but sometimes it really annoys me that it takes an hour to go through someone's pics when I'm looking for one specific one.
tommyv 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 2 17:40 -
Maybe a moderator should say something to the point whores about posting duplicate images. I see it everyday by one member specifically. If points weren't related to pic uploads I wonder if it would end some of it?

Deleted 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 2 19:28 -
I'd be for reducing points on posting pictures. It's easier to upload a series of images than it is to write a series of articulate comments or forum posts.

Not that posting images doesn't have its place. Still, I really just post images if I find some good ones for a particular item or if I need them for a list. I don't think there's a very large number of people on the site who haven't received more points for posting pictures than for anything else, whether or not that's what they'd identify as their greatest contribution.

@tersanay & tommyv: i have brought up exactly this some time ago in the mod forum for discussion. now the rules clearly state that all those cases you have described would indeed be against the rules (which everyone would see, if they would actually read the rules), because it clutters peoples pictures needlessly, and other, unique pictures get lost somewhere on page 1227. on the other hand, there are other, more pressing matters at the moment, like you said yourself: porn, nudity and the like.

Bael 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 2 20:26 -
@Raulo: i've contributed more to this site than most of you top users nowadays, be assured of that. nowhere as near as people like coroner, Prelude or The Flagship, sure. yet most of my uploaded pictures are of unpopular actors, bands and the like who didn't have one single picture uploaded, i've edited a lot of entries with information (which you don't even get points for), added alot of complete entries for movies, books, games etc. also, i've got the majority of points for tags, not for pictures.

personally, i don't care about the freaking ranking (i've also suggested in the past several times to get rid of it completely). i'm only at the top of the ranking for one reason: to show how ridiculous the whole system is, and to prevent that "image whores" or whatever you like to call them, get their undeserved (because people like i've mentioned in the beginning are the only fitting), questionable "glory" by being at the top.

I've kind've semi-suggested it before, but what about the option to report an entire 'user' so that the mods/admins can just delete the entire profile and everything they've ever done to boot. This would only be used in 'extreme' examples of course, but I bet I could go away right now and dredge up 10 examples of member profiles that should be deleted.

Bael raises another good example of something else that doesn't get points on listal. For the record a man many moons ago (Derron?) helped with the merging of multiple computer games entries, I'm sure he too received no points.
tommyv 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 3 12:01 -
tommyv 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 3 12:01 -
There is certainly A LOT of merging that needs to happen, so many actors, book, music movies, DVD's (especially) with multiple entries.

@ Bael For clarification my idea of a point whore (one example) is someone who uploads hundreds of pics everyday and there are just subtle differences between half of them, the rest are plain dumb. I was not implying that you are/were a point whore. If necessary I can name one individual I know is a point whore.

Since the "nudity, porn" is against the rules and there is not a section for it, then yes I agree it needs to go, but there needs to be better rules about it. I have posted examples of some stuff that is allowed and other stuff that isn't and it is funny of what is and what wasn't. One thing is the handbra, it is a slippery slope (no pun intended) for instance Jennifer Aniston in her hand bra pic I think we all would consider "art" but some of the porn stars, well I think we know...And then the ones with one porn standing in front or another squishing them together, is this the place for that? Then it comes down to where the line is drawn. The ones that kill me that are allowed at current time are the ones where usually the porn star has legs spread bent over touching toes and the pic is from the rear forward and her "area" is BARELY covered.

Tell me how I can help! I would be happy to help however necessary, I personally like this place a lot. Whether its merging or whatever...

One place the mods and Tom need to begin in my opinion is a better list of rules for pics.

No these are not allowed, that would be disallowed under 'sexually explicit pose' in the rules www.listal.com/help/imagerules

What rules do you think should be added?
Moderator
tersanay 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 5 19:56 -
For me, I think it should be easier to report images that are overly similar. For example, I reported this image www.listal.com/viewimage/1068144 for being a duplicate of this one www.listal.com/viewimage/1068141 since the only difference is where her hand is but the report was rejected. If they aren't going to be deleted for being actual duplicates then there should be an option other than other, mostly cause I always think that's anoying when a pic gets deleted for other.
tommyv 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 5 20:04 -
Like Tersanay stated reporting images shouldn't be such a pain.

A clearer description of the rules may be needed more so than more rules. "Sexually explicit images" can be interpreted differently among people. There is a pretty famous picture of Miranda laying on a couch with her arm covering her breasts (from GQ magazine) and this one got deleted for nudity, yet there are 1000's of handbra pics where nipples are BARELY covered and they are ok?

Why is it that when a pic is deleted everyone can still see it in a list?

more soon...little boy tugging my leg saying buh bye buh bye LOL

I was thinking, since often there are more than two pictures that are basically the same, perhaps we should be able to report multiple pictures as duplicates of one all at once?
jay-jay 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 5 23:59 -
I think you have lost the point of this site. It's supposed to be fun and you're taking it way too seriously. I have made some list that some of you might find questionable, but there are others on here that don't. One of my top voted list is Titled "Topless" you cant see anything because everything is covered that needs to be. But there people on here that don't like half the pictures in the list. If you don't like it, you don't have to look at it. Thats your choice and your right not to like it, but that doesn't give you the right to force it on me. So get off your soap boxes and lets go back to having fun on this site.

My complaint in this one isn't actually about nudity or anything like that. It's about having to search through hundreds of very similar pics for one certain one I need for a list. I've even taken to posting some in my own images, which does nothing to improve the community, just to avoid having to look through, for example, Taylor Swift's 5000 pictures.

I'm pretty much over the nudity complaint. If I stumble upon an inappropriate image I report it and leave it at that.
tommyv 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 6 12:37 -
@Jay-Jay I think you have lost the point of this thread, it started out as do you care about the ranking. Things changed some when we started discussing how some people post 100's to 1000's of images that are VERY similar, scrool up for examples. Posting similar pics like that say nothing more than point whore. The nudity part came about from the deleting images.

@Tom you asked about rule changes and I will get back to you prolly in a PM not here. However like I said earlier more detailed rules would be better especially for the ones that whine about why did it get deleted.

Regarding other images that may seem to be questionable now I will simply flag and then let the mods decide.
jay-jay 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 6 13:28 -
@tommyv It started about caring about rankings or not and then it morphed into people complaining pictures and nudity. I don't care about the rankings personally I'm ranked where I am because Ive been part of the site 2006 if not longer than that.
johanlefourbe 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 8 16:52 -
- About the ranking ?

Yes, I do care. By the way, thanks for the new points system, I have almost reached the top 10! Thanks, Tom! But, honestly, even though I would like to reach even higher positions, I'm pretty sure I will never beat the 'image whores' (love the expression though, I almost made a list 'celebrating' them but I got scared for their fearless revenge)...

- About the nudity ?

It is still an issue. The only way to stop this would be to completely delete the concerned listal user after a fair warning and to delete the entire 'actress' profile. In the mean time, I will suggest ignore them...

- About reporting and deleting pics which goes against the rules ?

I do respect the users and mods who take care of this but I would never do it. What's the point of reporting and deleting 100's of pics when 1000's are downloaded everyday? Such a waste of time...
El Raulo 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 8 18:38 -
Why to surrender so easily. Of course they will keep uploading a lot of images. specially helwender who apparently lives glued to his computer. I will keep reporting those pictures. When I stasrted this topic, I was thinking about members who really make original lists and upload pictures no one else did. It's very easy to make points here. Someone could add a lot of pictures or making a lot of "evolution" lists and that's it. Points with no effort. The point system is a bit more fair now, and that convinced me of staying in Listal. But I want to fight againts the so called "point whores". Listal used to be a great site until their arrival.
johanlefourbe 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 9 7:11 -
About the evolution lists, it is actually a fraction of my points. It is even a fraction of my lists created (I have made 350 lists and maybe 60 evolutions) but I know not everyone are fond of them. Sorry guys...
Rath 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 9 10:10 -
On the issue raised with the pictures, I think there should be a kind of "quality control" to keep up the typicals, to use another expression, "pictures lovers". I know it's impossible, but I've uploaded many images, especially picture movies, thinking those were really interesting and useful to the Listal community. I think the points -are important or not- they should reward the work is done on behalf of the web and its users.

Also I find it exaggerated the new allocation of points for review: as the longer, more unjust. And this just because of wanting to "dismount" a few "picture lovers".
I seem always the lists more important and meaningful to the Web and, seem to me, they aren't valued, little value. Also it could discuss the quality of them, but I guess still further complicate things for the suffering mods... :)

A question: what criteria are followed for "promotion to the front page"? Perhaps disproportionate 200 points for this type.

I thought don't send this message because I speak an horrible english. I apologize for my boldness. ;)
tommyv 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 9 13:00 -
Damn that was bold...kidding lol.

So one question has Nova taken over where Helwender left off? For whatever reason in the past week Nova has been posting tons of pics and they are ALL just like Helwender posted, extremely similar pics and lots of them. I know it would way way too much of a task to look at every pic uploaded but there must also be some way to limit the BULLSHIT pics that are uploaded. Maybe a limit per day? As one suggestion. Or even a limit to one certain profile. Maybe a person can only upload 10 pics of Heidi Klum a day or whatever.

Bael 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 9 20:15 -
@tommyv: Tom had ideas just like those (uploading limits). maybe those will be realized in the future as well as the others, so hold on ;).
Rath 13 years, 6 months ago at Nov 9 20:38 -
I also agree with the ideas very reasoned of tommyv and tersanay.
TrekMedic 13 years, 5 months ago at Nov 27 19:33 -
Here's my two cents:
1 - On rankings - it let's me know more about who might be newer than more productive,..that said,...
2 - I'm more for quality than quantity: posting 75 pictures of an actress walking from her car to the coffee shop and back doesn't impress me, but it gives the poster a ton of points and a higher ranking.
