He was known at that time for his Evil Dead films, but a decade later he would go on to direct the Toby McGuire Spider-Man films. It's a comic book movie that's not actually based on a comic book (the story is Raimi's). The film is pretty cheesy, but it's mostly intentional. It's a pretty fun time, but it does feel like it should be better than it is. I mean, you've got Sam Raimi directing, Danny Elfman doing the soundtrack, and Liam Neeson in the title role! But for whatever reason it never quite rises to legitimate greatness, nor is it quirky enough to achieve cult classic status. Still, it's worth a watch.

The plot of the film involves a scientist who is developing a breakthrough in plastic surgery. He refuses to pay protection money to the local mobster, though, so the gang beats him up and trashes his lab. In the fight, the scientist is horribly disfigured. He uses his new plastic surgery methods to change his face so that he can infiltrate the mob and take out those who attacked him.
