Disabling image comments?

I'm thinking about disabling comments for non personal images, I don't think that the comments are adding much value. What do you think?

Agreed. They serve no purpose.

I don't really like that .. Sometimes comments make the picture uploaders happy :D

"Congratulations, you found a picture on the internet anyone else could have found."

I definitely agree! A vote is more than enough to make an uploader happy.

I recommend disabling image comments for people only. Things like foreign film posters and album art have the possibility of decent conversation or questions.
Pictures of people just promote slavering imbeciles to comment.

Not only that, promotes slavering imbeciles to JOIN just to comment, and then vote for pornography. Yikes.

Sometimes comments are useful. When I stumble on a photo that doesn't match with the item (a wrong poster, a wrong screenshot, ..), I just post a comment. I don't 'report' it anymore, because all the pictures that I reported are still up.

In this case, I think that a comment about a wrong poster or screenshot together with the URL of the image in question, is better to be posted on the uploader's profile page. This can be more effective.

They will only be disabled for people only if at all.

i feel good,with comments alright.

Mmh... I don't agree for two reasons:
- the first is that every picture can be be a starting point for discussions. Since it's for people profiles, I'm thinking especially about fashion, but maybe because I'm just a girl :P
- the second reason is that commenting may be a faster way to report duplicates or pictures that don't work. It happened to me a few times, people commented that my pictures were duplicates or they uploaded highest resolution ones and I deleted them soon.

I didn't see any discussions like this, 99% of comments I saw didn't really add that much, see the comments from a month ago: www.listal.com/feed/type:imagecomment/17

It's much better to report the image, many users will not take action if their image gets a comment like this. Also if marked as a duplicate using the report system it will be redirected to the older image which is useful for anyone who has bookmarked the image.

Discussions may not develop because there are no RSS or update feeds or email notifications for image comments. Not many people are motivated to bookmark images and repeatedly check back in the hope that there *might* be a reply to their comment. And not many people will make comments in the first place once they realize this, so a bunch of "Cool!" or crude comments is what I would expect to see.
Also, as a result of disabling comments for people, more images may be uploaded to user's profile pages instead of the people pages, and linked to for lists from there, cutting down on the number of images available on the people pages.
