dannyjai is gone

johanlefourbe 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 9 11:49 -
Have you noticed that dannyjai is gone?

She was one of the big players in Listal for already a couple of years but, apparently, she has deleted her account.

Did she tell anyone why she left?

I spoke with her, via messaging, just prior to her pulling the plug and she didn't let on. Deleting the account tells me she isn't planning on taking a hiatus and returning.............

What do you mean with 'she didn't let on'?
Iceviper 8 years, 6 months ago at Oct 27 11:52 -
It was just simple pleasantries on general topics and life's goings on. No hints or indication that she was going to jump ship. As of late I have heard from other members and their unhappiness with the site but not a peep from DJ.

Sad, but life marches on......

Thanks for this info.

Personally, I don't have much problem with the new website.

I just wish,and that's something that bothered me since I started on this website years ago, that there were just more active users and more visitors. Because of the lack of interest and activity, it seems that everyone (at least, the active members...) is pretty much doing their own thing purely for themselves without much interaction from other people and it has a negative impact one the creativity, at least, I believe so.

johan, you nailed it. Everyone is doing their own business, but the lack of interaction between users is killing the site. I don't know why, actually I think it's a mix of several reasons (like for instance good users losing interest in the site, thus good contents not being posted any longer), but the new site doesn't seem to address those issues anyway.
Personally, I would like Listal pages to become more interactive, meaning that you can use an item page to discuss a movie or a person the page is about. It's the way IMDb pages work: on a movie page you can start one or more threads about the movie. On Listal that could be done not only for movies and shows but for celebrities, games, music, places! The potential is huge.
Now you can leave comments, yes, but you will not be notified if there is a reply to your comment or a new comment after yours. Even Listal forum threads lack a "subscribe to" feature. You have to manually check to find out if anyone replied.
It would be great to have a "subscribe to" feature on lists and reviews too. Let's say I read a good film review or I notice an interesting list, then I'd like to subscribe to the page, so that I am notified when someone leaves a comment to the review or to the list I subscribed to. Or, optionally, just be notified if someone writes a comment after mine, or if someone mentions my @username (like it is on Twitter and other social networks). I believe that's the way to go to have an interactive site.
By the way, even the Ranking system, which had its flaws (and I want to be very clear I am not asking for a comeback), was a way of sorts to keep the site "social", so to speak. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying I want it back (actually, I don't care one way or the other), but I think something else should replace it, like it was asked for in some Listal Feedback threads.

@The O.P.

I don't know, it could be interesting but such feature would work only if there would be a massive number of users, daily or occasionally. Otherwise, it would be just another gimmick that it is barely used.

Maybe one of the problem is the fact that there is just too much random stuff barely used nowadays.

For example, on each list, on the right side, you have a column 'Related lists' but, then again, if you go down, you have again another bunch of lists call 'People who voted for this also voted for' and again 'More lists from XXX'. Why? It seems that Tom kept adding options and possibilities through the years and, now, it's just overcrowded.

It's like the new note system. I don't mind it but I haven't heard anyone actually praising it. In fact, why was it actually added? did anyone actually criticize the previous note system? I don't think so.

My suggestion would be to streamline the website, to remove a lot of stuff that is barely used. Like for example, removing the ranking system (even though, like you, I wasn't against it) was a good move and I think it would be a good thing to remove even more elements that don't provide enough added value.

@johan

I absolutely agree: streamline the site and don't add new features just because they look good on paper. I agree with the examples you mentioned.
At the same time, though, do please fix the broken code (e.g. missing/wrong film release dates) and half-baked features (e.g. how are we supposed to browse image galleries or long lists with no Go to Next / Jump to Page links?).
As to the "interactive" features I was talking about, you are right too, that would be useless if no one is going to use them. Are people interested in using Listal as a social network, or have those people more interested in interaction already left the site? Is Listal just a showcase for personal interests (my collection, my lists, my reviews) with little or no interaction with others, apart from the "vote" button and the odd comment? That's a good question too. Anyway, I think user comments with no "subscribe to" are like a one-way street. You say your thing, but you will not get back because you are not notified of replies and further activity.

Apart from dannyjai, I'm seeing other users put a halt or decrease their activity on Listal, stop making lists, etc. Sometimes they announce their decision on the profile page. For instance, today I noticed mrhoundoom's and Coruscate's.
