custom lists vs. tags

Ipanema 17 years, 5 months ago at Jan 22 5:43 -
tags

Yes we need custom lists but the main advantage would be realised with item related 'custom' lists. One public list with all related items which you can't handle with tags or ratings (sequel, remake, original, game, book etc.)

But perhaps i just didn't get the right sense of custom lists...

People like making lists of the things they own. MY Bond films, MY kungfu flicks... Tagging is not the same thing. It just isn't. I guess there's no harm done, if these lists aren't marked public.

Also lists of personal preference can be useful, for example genre lists like my favourite film noirs, especially if they include commentary.

I'm not sure I'm following what you're saying. You're saying custom lists is taking emphasis away from tags, or making results of tags meaningless? or are you saying its improving things?

see, to me, it just adds another level of 'discovery' which is great to the site. Movies might be tagged 'James Bond', but I doubt EVERY james bond film is properly tagged, and I bet there's a few that shouldn't have been tagged that way. But with lists, if there is a 'James Bond' list that someone has made (and i think I made one -- lol --- ) and its listed in chrono order and people LIKE the list, they can vote it up and it shows up with prominence on all james bond films. Both lists and tags served a different purpose, and both complement and make it easier and more fun to find related films and odd topics.

A good way to show the difference is here:

www.listal.com/movie/dr-no-1962

notice that Dr. No has two 'James Bond' custom lists. My version includes 2 extra films; 'Never Say Never' - a Sean Connery Bond film that some argue is not a true Bond film but others disagree, and I also included the unreleased 'Bond 22' film.

Both are valid list, both can get voted on, and the lists with most votes appear at top. fair enough.

Now notice the 'James Bond' tag? click on it.

While both lists were sorted chronologically, the tag list shows it by # of times tagged as such, so it makes it a popularity thing - the new Casino Royale happens to be most popular on this site. That's also useful for people not familiar with the Bond franchise. But click on page 2 and you see 'Epic Movie' (i supposed it had a James Bond spoof in it) and 'From China with Love' which I imagine is a Bond-like film only with a chinese agent. Original Casino Royale is tagged as such as well, when its was a 60s made spy-spoof, not a real Bond film.

So the way I see it, lists give an official way to explore a series, while tags give it more dynamic and random exploration.

I know some lists are useless such as the several ones labelled 'Movies' but in time those will be voted off the main page once more lists are made. And which other types of lists can be related to Dr. No? Perhaps if someone made 'my favorite 60s films' or 'Sean Connery Bond films' or 'favorite spy films' or maybe it appears on some critic's choice lists or maybe it was oscar-nominated or won golden globes or something. who knows. once a lot more lists get made, it will be really nice way to explore rather than simply via tags.

Sometimes a tag is superior, if you aren't going to take FULL advantage of the list's extra functions. For one thing, order is a factor. And then the new Notes feature makes Lists essential, since some tags are self-explanatory but some List entries aren't. Plus, we'd have to rename the site if we got rid of Lists. And they're fun and aesthetic.

I think the feature in question should be the Collection page. You can hardly tag from it, you can't set a default order, we don't yet have our interfaces, and not enough items per page. Tags will be affected if the Collection page is done over.
