Cover music

How do you feel about covers? Do you loathe anything which isn't the original? Do you love it? Do you have an opinion on cover bands (i.e. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Hayseed Dixie)? Whats your favourite or least favourite covers (if you have them)? Or do you not really have anything much of an opinion of them in general, except that you like the odd one that comes around? Do share!

Personally, I have a love of punk and cello rock covers. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and String Quartet Tribute are favourites, and I love Rasputina's cover album. String Quartet Tribute have some wonderful covers floating about over hundreds of different bands and I recommend anyone looking them up.

On the other hand I hate all these dance covers that have been appearing lately. I liked "Another Brick in the Wall" when it was covered by Korn, but the new dance mix is trash (but thats partly because I hate dance music in general).

I love any cover that is a "drastic" change from the original. In other words, I don't want someone to sing another artists song where all I can think is "Wow, he/she is trying so hard to sound like the original."

If it's a fast song, I love when someone slows it down... or if it's a slow song, I love when another artist can mix it or pep it up.

I'm also a fan of unlikely covers, where you would never expect someone would listen to that kind of music, let alone sing it. For instance, Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie) covering an Avril Lavigne song, or that odd Alanis Morrisette cover of a Black Eyed Peas song.

Voxy, I recommend to you listen to the Obadiah Parker cover of Outkast's "Hey Ya". Slowed down a lot, makes the song bearable! :P

That right there is awesome! ... That's exactly what I'm talking about! :) I wish I knew how to rip that audio! :P

Outkast's music seems to be one of the best choices for making slow covers of. The Vines have done a couple in their live shows and I have a recording of them doing "Ms. Jackson" that's fantastic.

Thats why I download... Er, no, I mean... Downloading is bad, kids. :P

There is another cover of the same song on YouTube but by the band The Boss Hoss. It's country this time and is quite funny but a little freaky at the same time.

Another song I love at the moment is a cover of Coldplay's "God Put a Smile Upon Your Face" by Mark Ronson. It's sped up, the lyrics removed and played in a jazzy style. I haven't seen it on YouTube yet though which sucks.

I have a small collection of cool covers building up on my computer now. One of the places I hear them is on Radio 1 here in the UK. On a Tuesday night there is a show called the Black Hole presented by Colin Murray which is comprised of people sending in their internet finds! A couple of other covers to look out for:

Muse - "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You"
Smashing Pumpkins - "Dancing in the Moonlight" (live acoustic version)

Covers can be o.k. Cover bands I don't like so much, I have a bit of a hard time supporting someone who makes a living off others hard work.
Some good covers:
Johnny Cash- Soundgardens 'Rusty Cage', NINs 'Hurt' and Nick Caves 'Mercy Seat'.
Concrete Blonde- Leonard Cohens 'Evertybody Knows'.
10,000 Maniacs-Bruce Springsteen & Patti Smiths 'Because The Night'.
The Sisters Of Mercy- Rolling Stones 'Gimme Shelter'.
The Sundays- Rolling Stones 'Wild Horses'.
Swans- Joy Divisions 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'.
I could go on......

Agreed on the cover bands bit... or "tribute" bands... -shrug- definitely not my thing. Unless of course it's maybe an old band or artist that doesn't tour anymore or who never play their music live. In a case like that maybe I can see it not being as irritable.
Azathoth 17 years, 1 month ago at Apr 15 21:29 -
I can at least to some degree see the point in a cover band for The Beatles or Led Zepplin, but when we're talking about Korn.....
Obviously they have some skill in playing so why not create something new. Even if it sounds just like another band, at least it's in some way yours.

I loved the Vines' cover of Mrs Jackson, I like a lot of the Me First And the Gimme Gimmes' covers. I don't really think about covers too much I guess but occasionally a good cover song comes out and I have nothing against them.

I think of covers quite differently than movie renditions...

With movie renditions, it should be a good experience. Changes can be made, under the circumstance that the main points of the book are retained (ie, tone taken by narrator, important symbolism, underlying theme).

With covers, I want it to of course retain some quality of the original, but the artist should at least do something with it to make it their own while not insulting the original. And please, don't do a cover of Nine Inch Nails's 'Hurt' and change 'I wear this crown of sh*t' to 'I wear this crown of thorns'. I respect Johnny Cash a lot as a musician, but I'm thoroughly against changing lyrics. Not that you can't leave lyrics out, if you're only including the chorus or something like that.

Like Voxy, I'm a fan of cover songs that is a different take on the original.

My favorites: Iron and Wine - Such Great Heights, Damien Rice - When Doves Cry, Natasha Bedingfield - Somewhere Only We Know and John Martyn's version of Glory Box.

Ditto.

My current favorite cover song is Showbread's cover of 'Head Like A Hole'.

I haven't listened to any Nine Inch Nails covers other than Johnny Cash's one of Hurt, but I probably should. The original Head Like A Hole is pretty good, although the remixes don't pack as much of a punch. :(

I love covers if they're done by a group with some artistic credibility. For instance, I like Toots and the Maytals cover of John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Road" a lot. Most of the songs on the two Dr. John albums I have are covers and those are uniformly awesome, too. Ditto Patsy Cline and any number of jazz divas (Dina Washington is my goddess).

Pop and dance covers, though, tend to suck all the soul out of the originals.

Right now I'm really digging the Blue Hearts cover from that Linda Linda Linda movie.

I generally don't have a vendetta against covers but I usually don't pay attention to music anyways. :P

Unlike you, Thilian, I think it was better that Johnny Cash changed "crown of shit" to "crown of thorns" because that sort of made it more "his." Before they were stolen from me, I had all of the nin albums, and I'd never really noticed the song until I saw Johnny Cash's video of it. That's the kind of cover I like...when the artist covering the song makes it his. If that's by changing a lyric or two, or changing the song completely, I don't mind.

My favorite Johnny Cash cover ever is The Streets of Laredo.

Eric Clapton released two albums covering Robert Johnson's music, which were both brilliant. Of course the original recordings and Clapton's takes on them can't really be compared, since Robert Johnson had an acoustic guitar and Clapton had an entire band.

I actually like quite a few remixes, dance, harcore, trance, whatever kind of remix. I've got three cd singles and two vinyl singles (one of 99 Red Balloons by Nena!!) with remixes, and I love them all.

I detest mainstream rap in general, but I can usually stand the remixes for a listen or two.

I agree on making a song one's own. But the lyrics are really the whole message to it all; if you cover a song and replace lyrics with ones that fit your suiting, it's a little different than doing a Jazz version of it or something like that. I respect Johnny Cash very much as a musician, but this is one instance where I'm a tad bit more critical. In all honesty, music portrays a mood in a more intense manner than a song's worth of lyrics could, so to make it one's own a little alteration in that department is always appreciated. It's nice to hear Cash sing it all, though. ;)

I love covers. The more different the better although if it sounds ridiculous and is completely destroying the song I get really annoyed.

I love The Red Paintings cover of Mad World, Muse's cover of Feeling Good, A Perfect Circle's cover of Imagine & Living End's cover of Tainted Love. Although I do have a bit of a soft spot for Marilyn Manson's version of Tainted love too.

There's stacks more but I'd probably be here all day naming them.

A Perfect Circle's cover of Imagine

I'd like to hear that one. I have A Perfect Circle's first two albums and I must say they're talented.
Although I do have a bit of a soft spot for Marilyn Manson's version of Tainted love too.

Try, if you can, listening to his cover of I Put A Spell On You. It's just one of his good build-up songs.

Oh I'll definitely have to have a listen to that. I'll keep an ear out for it ;)

I also like Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's cover of Somewhere over the rainbow. It's more my speed then the original.

this is the song:
You Spin Me Right Round lyrics

Artist - Marilyn Manson
Album - Various Songs
Lyrics - You Spin Me Right Round

If I, I get to know your name
And I, could trace your private number, baby

All I know is that to me
You look like you're lots of fun
Open up your loving arms
I want some, want some

I set my sights on you (and no one else will do)
And I (I, I, I), I've got to have my way now, baby

All I know is that to me
You look like you're having fun
Open up your loving arms
Watch out here I come

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round, round, round

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round, round, round

I got to be your friend now, baby
And I would like to move in a little bit closer

All I know is that to me
You look like you're lots of fun
Open up your loving arms
Watch out, here I come

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round, round, round

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round, round, round

All I know is that to me
You look like you're lots of fun
Open up your loving arms
I want some, want some

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round, round, round

You spin me right round, baby
Right round like a record, baby
Right round, round, round

this gay song

I'm going to interpret that "gay" as happy to avoid drama.
