The Cost of Movie Tickets.

Mr. Lays 15 years, 7 months ago at Oct 14 4:36 -
The usual cost of movie tickets in my area doesn't exceed $8:50. Last month it went to $10.50. Everybody is in an uproar and swearing to just wait for the Dvd release (or support their local bootlegger). My question to the community is how much are movie tickets in your areas and do you feel *cheated*?

I live in Athens, Greece and the movie tickets here cost 7.50-8 euros -that is $11.15-$11.85. Four years ago the cost was 6 euros. I believe that they are very expensive, so I don't go to the movies as many times as in the near past. The american style multiplex cinemas are rather new here and there are many old theaters which offer a bad movie experience with awful quality of sound and dirty, uncomfortable seats.

In Bluewater Showcase Cinema, Kent, UK, a basic movie is £7.10 ($11.33 USD), a gallery seat in a comfy arm chair cost a hell of a lot more. Picture quality and seating is good however. But add another ticket for your partner, the cost of sweets, drinks, and it becomes a very expensive treat. Pick a terrible movie and its really gutting!

To watch the same rubbish movie in IMAX costs £13.50 ($21.56 USD) on the BFI Screen in London.

Monday - Friday before 17:00 6.80€
Monday - Thursday after 17:00 9€
Weekends 11.50€

3D are extra 2e

I'm more of a film festival guy. ~ 5-6.5e/film if you buy many.

I stopped going to movies in past few years because not only of ticket prices, but price of popcorn and drinks are insane.

But I got harsh reminder of how much it costs. I took my fiance and our kids to see a movie last week (cloudy with chance of meatballs - fucking hated it). I didnt want to, but it was a 'treat' for the kids. And before I knew what hit be, I dropped almost $80 for the night out!

I told all of them next time, I'd rather buy them a new Wii game and they all agreed. At least a new Wii game is a gift that keeps giving. All new kids movies will have to wait for their DVD release.

It ends up costing me about $20 for a movie and snacks. Now that I'm going to university, $20 has become nearly a week's worth of groceries(!). For that I might as well make plans to put a DVD on hold at the library and watch for free.

I miss the cheap theatre I used to live by; general admission was only $4. :(

Theater with stadium seating cost $7.25 matinee, $9.75 regular price. The theater in town is just a regular six theater cinema, and that's $6.75 and $8.00. the price doesn't bother me, but I only go once every six months or so.

In the cineplex theatre in my town:

Monday, Wednesday, Thursday: 8 € (~12 $)
Tuesday: 5,50 € (~8 $)
Weekend: 9 € (~13,50 $)
3-D Movies: 12 E (~18 $)

And that's only movies with 'normal' length (which isn't very long)

There's also a smaller cinema with a more artistic movie choice:

Monday: Wednesday, Thursday: 7 € (~10,50 $)
Wednesday: 6 € (~10 $)
Weekend: 7,50 € (~11 €)
(no 3-D movies yet)

That's all quite expensive as well. The student-discount is 1 € at the big cinema and 0,50 € at the smaller one. So that's not a huge relief either...

My local theatre with state of the art seating, sound, and picture quality is $10. The movie ticket isn't what kills me, it's the concessions. $4.50 for a Diet Coke is crazy. That said, If you look at the overall cost of living in America, and if you consider the amount of money it takes to not only make a movie, but run a theatre, it's all relative. Those of you threatening to boycott movie theatres because of the cost and wait for DVD releases may just find yourself without DVD's to be released, because the studios could no longer afford to produce movies. So, grudgingly, I will continue to shell out my hard earned cash for the thrill of the big screen, the previews (My favorite part), and of course, the feature film.

That's why I built a movie room!

I don't think that it is a boycott. We just can't do otherwise. I used to watch 30-40 films per year, but now I go 10-15 times to the movies after good thinking and many reviews, because if you pick an awful movie, you're ending up knocking your head on a wall or chasing the friend who suggested the film. It's not easy to go out with family members, your partner or friends and return home with only a few cents in your pocket.

Agree with Zozoulini, its not a boycott, its a choice of how we want to spend our money. The movie theatre isn't always the right choice. I'd gladly give £20 per person to the local cinema for an experience equal to going to see Star Wars the first time, but that hasn't happened since then.

Best cinema was in Cork, Ireland - old converted theatre with ornate gold decoration everywhere. Now I would still pay the admission fee just for a tour.

I will agree that I go far less often than I used to. Before, in the summer, I went every Sunday night. Now I go maybe once a month.
