Cool new electronic music?

robelanator 16 years, 9 months ago at Aug 31 13:27 -
I've spent the morning so far listening to Aphex Twin and Orbital and it occurs to me that I don't have any electronic albums in my collection that were made after around 2001.

Anyone got the line on what's the hot new shat in the electronic music world?

I guess that means you would have Discovery (Daft Punk)?

I don't own it, but I've heard most of the tracks from it, yeah. It's a bit kitschy, but I've always been a fan of disco derivatives so I found it pretty enjoyable.

There have been lots of decent electronica albums released since 2001! Here are a few of my favourites:

Squarepusher: In 2004 he released 'Ultravisitor', easily his best album. The middle is really difficult to listen to unless you're a hardcore electronic fan, but the beginning and ends of the album contain some of the greatest songs I have ever heard. I think he released 'Hello Everyone' in 2006. It wasn't as good, it was far more accessible though and still worth a listen!

Clark: 'Body Riddle' in 2006. A fantastic album. Clark is part of Warp Records, like Aphex and Squarepusher. Definitely worth checking this album out.

Venetian Snares: Can be quite volatile sometimes, but his two recent releases (bare with me on the names!) 'Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett' and 'Cavalcade of Glee and Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pom Poms' were released in 2005 and 2006 respectively. They're both solid albums.

Four Tet - Rounds (2003) Beautiful electronic music. I did have to check this one was released after 2001. One of the quintessential electronica albums in my collection, the man is a genius!

They're probably essential listening for any electronica fan, I guess it depends on how serious you are!

Then there are a few other albums worthy of mention:
Daedelus - Denies the Day's Demise (2006)
The Flashbulb - Flexing Habitual (2006?)
Edit - Crying Over Pros for No Reason (2004)

You may like stuff by UNLKE also, bit more of a hip-hop feel to it though. Sorry if you've heard of all of these, I didn't have time to skim your profile. If you have any quality stuff worth checking out, I'm all ears too! Hope it helps.

Thanks, GA. I haven't heard any of those yet so I'll see if I can track down some copies this weekend.

I have heard two of Squarepusher's earlier albums ("Hard Normal Daddy" and "Music is One Rotted Note") which didn't really tickle my fancy too much. Is "Ultravisitor" similar to his earlier stuff?

I think Ultravisitor is better. I love the album, it's much more...skillful? I don't know what word I'm looking for, it sounds better in terms of talent and production etc. Three or four songs in the middle are really hard going though, as I say, but his best work is also on there! It's far more electronica based than those two albums, they are almost jazzy at times.

When it comes to Squarepusher, I recommend Budakhan Mindphone, Burning'n'Tree and Feed Me Weird Things if you're not already familiar with them already. They're older, but nobody mentioned them and i thought I should because in my opinion they're among his best.

An album by Mocean Worker called Mixed Emotional Features is worth a listen.

Do you know Photek? Form & Function Vol. II and Solaris are especially worth a listen.

Klute is good also.

And Four Tet has a double CD remix album (Remixes) that has a whole bunch of great tracks on it - stuff previously only available on vinyl.

I could go on and on

Photek and Klute are more industrial than anything, really. Perhaps you should be a little more specific when asking for electronic music recommendations, Rob. ;)
