Will the insanity never end?

Rather than poking fun (all to easy...) and complaining, perhaps it would be more productive (possibly more work as well) to lead/educate by example.
I'm not saying it would always be easy or particularly fun (maybe just thankless). Mind you we have an uneasy mixture of adults/minors and sometimes inappropriate content is posted.
Because it bears repeating:
This is the internet where 'men are men, women are men and children are cops'.

Voxy, aparently not.
Is is wrong for me to want to introduce the online world to apostrophes?
EDIT: You make a good point there.

Mmmm, I wonder if this is a forest for the trees or trees for the forest problem?

Maybe we should just ignore them. Problem is even if we did a mass ignoring there are still too many of them out there that wouldn't participate with us.

Well, in other forums they have posted rules or a faq and moderators that can edit/ban/delete/lock... This forum is more of a free-for-all, which does have it's charms at times, but also has it's disadvantages.

We should'nt take such topics in notice, anyone could type in anything, but as you all know that each day i guess more than 20-40 people sign up. Barely half of these people know what listal is all about. It takes time for a member to actually know what is going on in here.
When a member is new and barely knows whats going on in here he/she types in a topic like this.
Rather than ignoring, you can advice peacefully that this aint a G-unit kinda place..:)
We should all respect one anothers thinking as not everyone have similar thoughts..Listal is all about likings..
Cheers :)

coyoteblue, we have an FAQ! (hehe rhyme). It is in the list of groups but the topics don't appear in the new topics list, so it's not really that noticeable. Come join and we can all make a thread about Groups etiquette. ;)

"List the stuff you love"
Pretty self explainatory.
Pretty self explainatory.

where's the site to list the stuff I hate/dislike? :)

listnone?
That what I think of it, list all the stuff you love.

I would have a great time listing only stuff I didn't like:)
Not everything on my lists here are things I "loved", or even fully liked....I list my collections, though, and I love my movie collection...my book collection (much smaller than it used to be, and I wish it were bigger)...those are what I am working on the most:)

I just looked at the original person's profile for the first time---apparently, she is 14. So that explains some of it:)
Also, if she ever comes back, the word is cutie, not cuety

Sarosh - alot is actually a lot (not one word...that's bad English).

In Australia "alot" is accepted along side "a lot" depending on the context. Just thought I'd share that. I'm full of useles info lol

thats right.. that is exactly what we were taught at school here..! ALOT

alot is bad English...you shouldn't be taught that it is accepted. It is a misuse of the language.
allot is a word. alot is not. Even my browser spell check points it out as an error.
Guess my schools had different standards on teaching the English language, because using "alot" was ALWAYS marked wrong, every single time, across the board, in all schools I attended.
It is terrible, terrible. It makes me cringe to hear that people are told it is accepted. It should not be.

further on the subject of "alot":
"Perhaps this common spelling error began because there does exist in English a word spelled “allot” which is a verb meaning to apportion or grant. The correct form, with “a” and “lot” separated by a space is perhaps not often encountered in print because formal writers usually use other expressions such as “a great deal,” “often,” etc. If you can’t remember the rule, just remind yourself that just as you wouldn’t write “alittle” you shouldn’t write “alot.”"
Also, from my local University's writer's guide:
"
A lot / Alot / Allot
A lot means "a lot": "A lot of pancakes." Note that this is an informal expression.
Allot means "to divide" or "to give out": "They allotted six square feet per family."
Alot means nothing, and therefore is not to be used under any circumstances."

Exactly the opposite thing here, in my high school, when i used to write in allot, the teacher used to cancel it, i remember asking her about the correct phase, and her reply was the same.
And i studied in cambridge international school, off board campus teachin british ciricullum, now you confuse me even more, if its alot or allot.
If it was allot, then i am dead sure, they wouldnt be teaching me the wrong one. (i.e alot)

You are right, it would be a misuse of the language, but its confusing me as i was taught the same thing in my school.

allot is a word, as it says above, meaning to divide, or give out.
If you were using it, with that spelling (ALLOT) in place of A LOT, then you were wrong, and that would be why you were marked wrong, if I understand you correctly.
ALOT is NOT a word. Like it says, you wouldn't write ALITTLE. It's A LOT---I had A LOT of pancakes. NOT I had ALOT of pancakes.
That is terrible.
If you used ALLOT in place of A LOT, then yes, you were wrong, and your teacher was correct to mark you wrong.
IF you were using ALLOT for the proper use, and being marked wrong, then the teacher was wrong.
If you use ALOT in place of either ALLOT or ALOT, then you are wrong. Period.

lol..k from now onwards its allot for me..;)
Thanx :)
Thanx :)

you are going to use ALLOT for A LOT?
why?
Did you miss the point that it is incorrect?

Did you miss the point that it is incorrect?

No no..i totally understand what you are trying to say..i'll use Allot/alot where i am supposed to..i think i didnt know the actual place i had to put these ones in..

once again, ALOT is NOT a word. You have to have a space between the two words being INCORRECTLY squished together:
A LOT........NOT ALOT--which is not a word.
A LOT........NOT ALOT--which is not a word.

ahhh....jessica u make me cry now..:'(
All right..alot is no word..its A LOT..and i m suppose to use ALLO..
all right?

what? if you are saying a lot of something, use "A LOT".
if you are talking about dividing something up, then use "ALLOT".
This is making my head hurt.

Can't it be "A LOT of cars" and "ALLOT of cars" at the same time?
This is making me Cry!!

Sarosh, ALLOT is a completely different word altogether.
"1. to divide or distribute by share or portion; distribute or parcel out; apportion: to allot the available farmland among the settlers.
2. to appropriate for a special purpose: to allot money for a park.
3. to assign as a portion; set apart; dedicate."

Nope. It isn't an actual word. It is a common mistake to combine "A LOT" into one word when that isn't actually correct. Just use "A LOT".

Jeez louise! It may not seem like it but I think that got a bit out of hand and maybe shouldn't of been done so much on a public forum. Maybe next time when it comes to correcting someone so extensively you should send them a message instead...
I would like to say also Jessica that schools here do have a high standard when it comes to teaching. That actually offended me, surprisingly.

Alot is slang, end of story.

I just realized how badly she spelled "anything". "enithing". It's not even any shorter.

lol.. isnt slang supposed to be simple, short?
People are making English, even more difficult to understand!

I know!
Some people that type poorly abbreviate words even though the abbreviation is only like 1 letter shorter, but that one wasn't any shorter! It just looked stupid!

alot isn't a word. period.
If it was slang, it would turn up with a definition and say "slang" next to it.
It isn't slang. It isn't a word. It is incorrect...a mistake...sloppy...or anything else you want to call it.

Yeah it is incorrect, but if we ask them, they are going to call it 'Slang'..This is total rubbish..and makes no sense instead.

It is slang. I have a slang dictionary right in front of me and this is what it says;
"1. A great deal. -adj. 2. many; a great number or amount of. [a common spelling error, but also used delibrately as a marker of informal or cool (i.e. anti-authoritarian) writing or ethos]"
Slang isn't the same in every country.

Conclusion, people type in whatever they feel, or are taught at their own regions.
As far as it is understood, i don't think it should be a problem.
Corrections should be accepted everywhere, ofcourse, it's not the same everywhere.
Cheers :)
