City picture deleted

My picture of Berlin has been deleted. This one:

I understand that a mod deleted it, because it is a photomontage, consisting of several pictures (I can't think of any other reason). This is against the rules, yes. I can understand that this rule is ok for people or single objects. But one photo representing a whole city is difficult - it's not only one building and aerial pictures don't show enough details. A photomontage can give a better overview of a city than one single photo, especially as the primary image, isn't it? Please think about it, if it's not smart to make an exception in the rules.

Primary images are also shown as small thumbnails. What would be seen when it is a collage of many pics? :)

For instance, compare a NY collage with a single shot, when they are shown as 70 px thumbnails.

New York is maybe not a good example, because everyone knows the skyline of that city. But is that a reason to disallow collages, because they are not good as thumbnails? Covers of movies are also a type of a collage and also often difficult to recognize as thumbnails.

On the other hand, on second thought, thumbnails have a fixed width BUT not a fixed height, so a well-chosen taller collage with just few images in it might do, perhaps, I mean as a "primary image" thumbnail.

Also, I can see your point, that is to say, the "face" of a city or town is not just in one pic, as opposed to people's faces in their portraits.

I hope Tom clarifies if we can allow exceptions for collages summing up the main attractions in a city.

Yes that would be really great if Tom could add an exception in his rules. :-)

Maybe the mod who deleted my picture could also say a word in this thread. I believe "compcua" was the mod who did it, right?

Yep. I did hesitate quite a bit actually but the main reason I decided to delete (other than the no collages rule) was because I was thinking the main problem with collages is that there can be an infinite number of combinations. So then how do we decide what's the best combination of buildings, what best represents the city etc...
I was also thinking it might be better for the primary image to be some kind of map thingy with the position of the city, or the city flag or the coat of arms.
Anyway, I won't do it again unless Tom says the 'no collages' rule applies to the places category also.

As far as I know, we can't un-delete a picture.

Like compucua said, a problem with collages is infinite combinations. Even if Listal is going to allow some well-chosen exceptions for cities and other large places, "spamming" the galleries would not be allowed, in my view.

Spamming is always bad. And of course many photo combinations in a collage are possible but I don't see a problem with that as long as the photos are representative for the place. On "my" collage of Berlin, that was deleted, were very well known places included like the Fernsehturm, Reichstag and Brandenburg Gate - I reupload it (I would have a problem when non of these would be on a collage). You could allow maybe a limited number of collages if you have a problem with them. On movie pages it's possible to upload infinite numbers of covers.
