Can't set profile images

I'm finding that a lot of pictures can't be set as profile pictures image.

The link to set them is just missing, and this is what you see instead:

And it's very often pictures that DO meet the criteria for a profile image (face visible, not full body shots...), unless I'm missing something.

I was told it's because they use such large photos, that some have to be embeded too keep it running. If not that would have to use a larger server.
