Can anyone suggest a brilliant RPG series?

I am already a fan of Final fantasy, Breath of Fire, Suikoden, Chrono Trigger and Pokemon and so am looking for something preferably on the PS2 or DS (or even PC) which i can get in to. I tried "Lost Magic" on the DS, it was awful. I own Kingdom Hearts which is good but i stopped playing pretty quickly, and i used to own "Sky's of Arcadia" which i hated. So, any suggestions?

Dragon 'Something' can't remember them that well but they are meant to be the old rival to FF. Theres agout 7 of them out.
Legends of Dragoon on the PS1 is a classic RPG. 4 Discs!
Septerra Core, PC game. Quite rare.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Series. Action RPGs.
Wild Arms.

Is Lost magic that one where you draw spells? I kinda like that one, never finished it cuz I played it on my friend's DS
If you like strategy and have a wii, get Fire Emblem Radiant Dawn

Sounds cool to me. I wouldnt be able to get the PS1 games i think, but i have a means to get any PS2/PC suggestions.

i know one, but you'd probably have to get a GBA emulator for it. Fire Emblem.

TA, this is the one you were thinking of:
www.listal.com/game/dragon-quest-viii-journey-cursed-king-playstation-2
haven't played it yet, but played the classics Dragon Warrior series. Its now called Dragon Quest, and the PS2 version is supposed to be quite good. The next version, DQ9, is coming on DS only, late 2008 or early 2009 so if you get into the series, its something to consider. Its not a well know series worldwide, but in Japan, some even consider it more popular than FF series.

Brilliant cheers 'lude il look into it.

Oh! Monster Hunter is a really good game, though they took down the Monster Hunter Online Servers permanently last Christmas...

np bro. I only remembered it coz I loved the original Dragon Warrior for NES and made a list recently, and saw the DQ8 for PS2.
a quick history, Dragon Warrior (aka Dragon Quest) 1 2 & 3 were all on NES and part of a 'trilogy'. 4, 5 and 6 were a second separate trilogy, but only 4 ever got released outside of Japan. But just recently, a DS remake of 4 came out in Japan and was a huge hit, and plans are under way for 5 and 6. And some people found english localization files inside the DS ROMs, so it is very likely that DS versions of 4, 5 and 6 will come to North America and Europe. 7 was a PlayStation game (one of longest RPGs, apparently) and 8 as mentioned is a PS2 title. Let me know if its good, i'm dying to check it.

Ah brilliant, i like the sound of "longest rpg" !!! Im not sure if what im about to say is allowed, so if its not tell me and il edit it, but i have a chipped PS2 so i can download PS2 games but im not sure about PS1 to be honest, id need to test it out n see. But i can definitely get 8 at some point, i think il hunt it out and burn it over the next couple of days.
Do they run together at all like Suikoden? Or are they a collection with similar characters like Breath of Fire/Different like Final Fantasy? (I can always see for myself haha)

the PS1 game Dragon Quest 7 was a huge hit in Japan, over 4 million sold (biggest seller in 2000) but it was panned in North America by game critics partly because it was 'too long' (main quest alone is 100+ hrs gameplay). Not sure about the length of DQ8 though.
About characters, I'm not sure about that. I *think* its all in same kingdom, but different characters each game, but dont quote me on that :)

I should also point out that the link I sent you was the NTSC version. The European/PAL version is simply called 'Dragon Quest: Journey of the Cursed King':

Thats why America's Game Critics are idiots
Impatient bastards, replace them with people that actually care!
Anyone who says a game is too long needs to see PSO, beating the story is kind of easy(Only level 128 is required to be able to beat Ultimate Mode) however, then you have to get god weapons, do the mini quests AND get to the mx level (999)
after level 13 it takes 2 hours of game place to get to level 14...
now... imagine getting to level 999 from 998, that alone is a few hundred hours of gameplay
I think only something like a few hundred people have even made it to 900
Unfortunately, it was originally for Sega, however, Sony decided to let Gamecube remodel it to a 'better version'... if PS2 had that thing and had upped the graphis to PS2 level... dang... Can we say Halo would look like Shit? Lolz

Genji is pretty good, though not very... RPG
more adventure with SOME RPG in it

DQ8 is the Cursed King version then yes?
correct. Dragon Warrior/Quest games were never released in Europe during the early NES days, so marketing decided to drop the '8' for the PS2 PAL edition.

Hehe very smooth. I hate it when we get games with 2 or 8 etc on them but there are no 1-7!!!! Happens every once in a while.
Searching for DQ8 now.

i would say champions of norrath

I don't know ow you feel about mass media tie-ins, but .hack// games are fairly entertaining.
Trace Memory on the DS is brilliant if too short.
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is fun as hell.
The World Ends With You just barely came out. I'm not sure how it is, but it looks very interesting.

on PC:
Baldur's Gate
Knights Of The Old Republic
Fallout
Wizardry
Ultima
Gothic
System Shock (actually these are action RPGs, brilliant nonetheless)
Deus Ex (actually these are action RPGs, brilliant nonetheless)
Neverwinter Nights
Elder Scrolls

just came across this while merging items, and it looks like a very promising RPG for the PS2. Sort of an anime version of Star Wars.

Again,
Is Lost magic that one where you draw spells?
You know, where you are the little kid with brownish hair, and you have various spells; I think you start with a gust thing, and I *THIN* you start with Wind, anyways, the one with the witch who destroys your house?

this games not really a series but the best rpg game ive ever played is Legend of the Legaia for playstation. They use a completely different way of fighting that i havent seen in any other rpg game. I recommend any fan of rpg gams to try this out. to this day i havent played an rpg game thats impressed me more than this one.

Dragon Quest, Star Fox, .Hack//, Megaman, Virtua Fighter

Manling, how is the first DS? I got into DS II and got quite far, but then had a system crash and lost my save files. Debating whether re-starting a new game in DS II or starting with the original.

on the best RPG's are the Final Fantasy Series

@Prelude: well, the first Dungeon Siege has nice graphics
(although the graphics of the second part were a little better) and a good gameplay, but it has an almost nonexistant and boring story and rather low complexity, even for an action rpg (in comparison to let's say Diablo 2). because it's not very long to play through i can still recommend it as a "quick snack". storywise it has no connection to the second part, so it doesn't matter which you play first.

I agree with Bael...
The second is better than the first.
The second is better than the first.

If you like tactical RPGs, Disgaea is like heroin.
I've heard the new(er) Star Ocean is pretty good, but haven't played it yet. The previous entry in the series ("The Second Story" for PlayStation1) was pretty fun, though.
For the PC, Knights of the Old Republic (set in the Star Wars universe) was very good. Jade Empire (a kung-fu action RPG set in ancient China) was cool, too. Both felt a little short (only 15-25 hours), but I think that's only because I'm used to having to spend 20 extra hours doing mindless leveling up in games like Final Fantasy.

I remember when Golden Sun fist came out on the GBA. I wanted to play it then, but had no way to. Nearly seven years later I find it at the swap meet, and now it has a permanent residence in my DS. Until I find the sequel, that is.
Chrono Trigger is also out on the DS now.

maybe ....infinite undiscovery.

Golden Sun is amazing, I recently got it as well from a Pawn Shop lol,
I want the second one too... it's supposed to be really good...
Anyways games I or others have not mentioned...
Well it's a rather childish game if you like fighting, but if you want to make medieval music(ish) stuff, it's rather interesting, Mabinogi, you can only make one character without paying, it's got basically Maple Story graphics made 3D and slightly more realistic, with cooler movements and less cartoonish(okay, MS wasn't a good comparison), but it's a good game if you're bored, though it is challenging if you have no idea wth you are doing :P, it's got a unique skill system, where certain skills give certain new stats and require Talent or something, and at first you have a lot of the Talent stuff, but it will quickly run out if you want everything,
it is actually a very interesting system, rather good for a free Rpg, though I doubt you'd enjoy it for long, it's still agood idea to check out the system
It's for PC btw, just look it up on Google(or Polycola, or Yahoo)
