Bravely Default

I just picked this up and have been pretty impressed with it as a new comer to the FF series and having never touched it before.

I was curious what anyone else thought of the game?

Please no spoilers.

I picked this up... but I haven't gotten around to it yet. My friend's been pouring hours into it however. I think he has like 125 hours of playtime on it.

Interestingly enough, it's widely believed that Bravely Default was originally a Final Fantasy game early in development. It was *planned* to be the sequel to Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light on the Nintendo DS released back in 2010... but as development continued it was just so different than the game it was based off of they made a new IP out of it. If you look at the artwork for The 4 Heroes of Light you'll see how closely this game resembles it... but even though I like 4 Heroes I'm sure Bravely is on another level entirely when it comes to quality.

While The 4 Heroes of Light isn't a bad game it is cravenly old school. That may sound silly to note since Bravely is as well, but with 4 Heroes I can see why people dislike the thing. There are some odd design choices in that game that could turn a lot of people off.

I've never played a Final Fantasy game before, but I can totally believe it originally being a sequel to the series, as the art style is very similar and it even follows the "Jobs" and other things that I've seen in the games from watching clips on Youtube. More specifically, the way you line your men up on the screen for the fight sequences is totally like FF.

I've been thinking about picking up FF III and IV for the DS, though so many people seem to really hate those remakes.

When it comes to the III and IV remakes (which were done by Matrix Software who did 4 Heroes) I actually like Final Fantasy III quite a bit. If you haven't played a lot of FF you'll probably dig it more than someone who has played a lot/more of the games.

My thoughts on the FFIV remake are kind of mixed however. I've always had a weird relationship with FFIV in general (I can respect the game and it is a good product but I'm just indifferent to it) but FFIV on the DS just does some things that are just off-putting. I personally couldn't stand the difficulty spike and how the enemies were programmed to counter attack certain actions with their own actions when the original isn't really like that. Also, I was kind of bummed that the voice acting wasn't used during more scenes.

The III remake appears to run cheap these days, I'll definitely be buying it eventually, as I don't have many DS games.

I've been very pleased with Bravely Default. I've not made it far but my 6 hours into the game has been primarily on grinding.
Ashley Winchester 10 years, 1 month ago at Mar 18 2:57 -
Actually, don't get me started on grinding... I'm playing Breath of Fire III on the PSP and most of the time I've been playing it has been devoted to grinding for the additional attacks you can learn from certain people. The game isn't even that long (it's is actually much shorter than I remember) but the time spent in battle definitely makes it longer than it be otherwise.

I have three hours put into the game so far. It's one of the more better Square Enix games lately. I need to get back into playing this when I'm not in a MegaTen mood.

RPG games are centered around grinding :p

You can never go wrong with it no matter what. That's all I do on Fire Emblem and this game so far. I've got 14 hours into Bravely Default that are all grinding, trying to reach level 10 of free lancer, but I've cracked a lot of levels into black mage and knight too

This game is one of the most perverted things I have ever played. It's fun with it's strengths, but it has it's problems...big problems.

Explained further in my review

Errr...

This is tricky. There is a lot I have to say about this... and I agree and disagree with you.

Yes, this has become more prevalent in JRPGs lately... but this, this isn't a new thing. If this bugs you to this level I'd suggest never playing Xenosaga on the PS2 because it is full of crotch shots of what looks like a little girl and the bad guy pretty much mind rapes her later in the game. Also it's implied he has had his way with similar, young looking beings although you obviously never see that.

However, I do kind of have an issue with how you worded your message in your review. You DO have the right to you your opinion... but how much do you really know about Japanese culture? I'm sure some would say differences in culture don't excuse this... but you kind of have to understand how the Japanese view things of a sexual nature. Unlike, say, America, I don't believe sex is regarded as nature's "dirty little secret" over there, parents don't get in a tizzy when little Johnny is exposed to even the slightest sexual thing like they are in the US. I've been told by several people who live in Japan that violence in games is actually a greater concern for them than sexual themes are. In fact, several games like Resident Evil 4 are censored over there - there are no beheadings in the Japanese version.

Again, am I defending this...? Not really... or at least not entirely. I think calling it "perverted" in such a stout fashion (and possibly taking a jab at the nation's thought process as a whole through this piece of entertainment) when you're mainly using your own culture's views as a barometer is very skewed way of looking at things. For example, I take it you are from Russia? Considering the goverment's recent laws targeting homosexuals should I just peg that the country's entire culture as homophobic? No, of course not. It's not hard to see what's really going on there and I would refrain from making such a blanket statement because I just don't know that much about Russia and it's people.

You can call attention to things like this without being so blunt. Here's a link to a review that tackles the same issue you had with Bravely Default but with a different game:

See? The author clearly doesn't like this either... but does he really draw a line in the sand? No... and again, while you are free to write whatever you want the way you phrase it really determines how effective it will ultimately be to those who read it.
