Better importing?

aside from mediaman, i also have just plain text lists of my stuff. and it would be great it i could upload my list and have listal automatically find everything.

Here's a "me too" post for this one... A simple CSV imnporter may be useful. Otherwise, I have all my stuff in OpenDB and if somehow importing from that could be done, I'd be all for it :-)
Listal is a great site, it's just that I can't really use it until I can get all my stuff from my current OpenDB system into this one.

It difficult to make an importer for a lot of sites as I would have to rely on title matching with our existing database which is not very accurate. If they export UPC or EAN or ISBNS it might be possible.

I hate to beat a dead horse, but.....
I'm currently using an openDb that allows you to import from several different file formats, as well as search amazon, empireDVD, and quite a few other databases...or, if all else fails, you can manually enter the information yourself. I guess my question is this, why limit your users to using third-party software such as (the PC only) DVD Profiler in order to import their collection? I'm sure you have your reasons, but I'm just wondering why you couldn't implement additional methods of importing (CSV, Excel, XML, manual entry...) Is there something I'm missing here?

The importer for dvd profiler was quite complicated and still not 100% accurate. The importers require a fair bit of work and will only ever be used by a small percentage of users as there are a lot of different applications out there.
I do still intend to add some based on demand.
In the case where a unique identifier cannot be matched with the listal database (e.g. a UPC code) I will have to use title matching which is not always accurate. I either have to match what i can and ignore the rest or present a dropdown to the user to select which title is correct, which will be complicated to write I think.

I agree with Samson, amazon.ca is a great ressource! which includes a lot of films not available in the usa or elsewhere for that matter.
I have my dvds lists on 2 other programs, and it would be nice if listal could import from them: dvd profiler, and the other is CATVids [they both organize their lists very similarly], although the latter program is _not_ free, but it does work great and it lists Amazon.ca now in their list, Samson! :)
