The 1970s was a classic era of cinema for me. Movies from this period are well made, have some great stars and interesting social commentary. Some great films from this time:
The French Connection (1971)
The Godfather (1972)
The Sting (1973)
Serpico (1973)
The Godfather: Part II (1974)
Marathon Man (1976)
Alien (1979)
Apocalypse Now (1979)

I'd have to go with 1972:

The Godfather
Aguirre: The Wrath of God
Deliverance
Last Tango In Paris
Solaris
Frenzy
Fellini's Roma
Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance

1994 - Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, Dumb and Dumber, The Lion King, Natural Born Killers, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Pulp Fiction, Hudsucker Proxy, Ace Ventura, Ed Wood, Hoop Dreams, True Lies

Further back... 1985 - Back to the Future, Brazil, Goonies, Breakfast Club, After Hours, To Live and Die in LA
1979 - Apocalypse Now, The Jerk, Being There, Muppet Movie, Alien, Kramer v. Kramer
1967 - Graduate, Cool Hand Luke, The Good Bad and Ugly, Bonnie & Clyde, Jungle Book, Point Blank, Wait Until Dark, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, The Red and the White

As Stehako mentioned earlier:

"2007 (No Country for Old Men, Into the Wild, Assassination of Jesse James, There Will Be Blood, Ratatouille, and many many more)
and 2013 (Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle, Her, Inside Llewyn Davis, and many more) are recent years that showcased a large amount of stellar films"

For sure, 2007 is one of those great years. No Country, There Will Be Blood, The Assassination of Jesse James, and Michael Clayton.
