Best recent thrillers?

Thrillers are simply my favourite type of movie. Hardboiled cop thrillers, film noirs, spy thrillers, sophisticated whodunnits, all kinds. But I'm lazy at keeping up with "upcoming releases" etc. So I'm asking: What for you have been the best thrillers of the past couple of years? Not sorta alright or watchable, but the really good ones?

For me the best would be "The Departed", which I actually preferred to "Infernal Affairs", even though I'm a big fan of HK movies. I think the remake messed up the ending though. "Sin City" was also pretty amazing. But like said, I really haven't been keeping up.

*shock* *gasp* Preferred The Departed over Infernal Affairs?!? BLASPHEMY!

Well, I really don't follow upcoming releases and I'm not good with years of movies but one I've seen rather recently was The Lives of Others (or the original title: Das Leben der Anderen) and it was wicked good I thought.

The Life of Others and The Departed are great films, haven't seen Internal Affairs yet, but it is in my plans though.

Some recent thrillers that I loved are: No Country for Old Men by the Coen brothers, Breaking and Entering by recentely deceased director Anthony Minghela and Zodiac by David Fincher, who, since Seven just makes great films.

'The Departed' is recent? lol

um, ok, i thought maybe you meant recent, as in last 6 months tops.

in which case, check out 'Michael Clayton'.

and if you loved 'The Departed', you MUST checked out 'American Gangster' - also deals with police/crook corruption.

And the ones Samira recommended, especially 'Zodiac'. Great taste in films, Samira. :)

"American Gangster" looks amazing. I need to add it to my want to watch.

"Zodiac" was ok. It was a little slow moving for me, not too much of a thriller if you ask me. But it was an ok movie.

No Country For Old Men is the most recent thriller I've seen, I thought it was amazing beyond belief. If you haven't already, you must check that out.

Michael Clayton seemed to me a completely different style to something like The Departed.. one of the reasons that I loved The Departed so much was because of not only the thriller aspect of it, but also the action.. shooting, explosions, that kinda stuff. Michael Clayton on the other hand is more of a drama kind of thriller... not edge of your seat thrills. Well, not for me anyway... but it was a good film.

What about if I didn't love The Departed but loved Infernal Affairs?

Well I haven't seen Infernal Affairs yet, but I rated 'Departed' a 7/10 and 'Gangster' a 9/10 if that tells you what my tastes are like. I thought Departed got way more praise than it deserved. It was ok, but nothing spectacular.

This message has been deleted. Reason: too much yada yada about departed!

Gotta agree with that. It was far too encyclopedia-like for me; just a retelling of "facts."

"American Gangster" was awesome... but a lot of the stuff mentioned here I wouldn't categoize as "thriller"

Maybe it's just because it's the one I saw first and I feel as if I should still have loyalties with it but The Departed just kinda fell flat for me with the ending it had. It really negated a bunch of the good vibes I had throughout the rest of the movie. And if you couldn't tell online the SHOCK GASP was partly obligatory sarcasm I felt was needed.

hm... seems like only the most well-known movies are discussed here. which i think is really a pity since there are probably quite a few other interesting ones as well out there.

and that's why i'd like to toss these two into the mix:
anamorph
the oxford murders

both don't exactly have great ratings at imdb but i thought that both were remarkable, even though not perfect - i rated them with 8/10

i was actually looking in here for recommendations of other recent (really recent - like weeks/months...) thrillers but oh well... i hope that maybe my posting inspires somebody to write about some recent thrillers he found interesting, even though they may not be as popular es e.g. the departed.

I know... when I posted this I was hoping people would come up with huge lists of their favourites. Departed was meant as a time frame really.
really recent - like weeks/months...

That too.. Maybe I should rename the thread or somn. The thing about recent, it depends where you live. What's going on in US this week don't have much relevance when I'm checking out DVD bargain bins at local stores. And more obscure movies it takes some time before people find out about them.

But yeah, I'd really like to hear some more recommendations too. All the great thrillers I see these days are from the 40s, 50s, 70s...

well one more rather recent one (it's already about one year old) i can mention is about in the same category as the ones mentioned above quality-wise (very good but nothing truly exceptional): fracture

@ release dates: yeah that's a problem but fortunately, there's online shopping nowadays and also you could just create a textfile on your desktop or something listing movies you want to buy in the near future, once they are released.

@ obscure: well that's exactly what communities like this are about for me. i don't care about reading about all those big movies that i read about on every second website anyway but here i think you have a good chance of finding hidden gems by looking at favorites of people who have a high compatibility rating or... yeah... posting stuff just like in here ;)

i just looked through my movie list... two more of my 8/10 thrillers in 2007 (unfortunately, i can't offer something i rated higher in 2007/2008 - there just isn't anything... except you count "inland empire". but i don't think that really fits in here) you have probably already heard about are: mr. brooks, the number 23

28 Weeks Later is an awesomely effective horror/thriller. I also liked Sunshine.

One of the best horror/thrillers of recent years would have to be The Descent. It was first released in 2005 so it's scarcely recent, but it's great.

It was made in 2003...but I have to mention Identity!
