Stehako 10 years, 11 months ago at Jun 10 14:21 -
It's mid June and a good time to look at the first half of the year and rate your favorite movies so far!

List your top 10 or top 5, whatever you want

To start off, here are mine; with ratings

1. Monsters University 9.5
2. Before Midnight 9.5
3. The Place Beyond the Pines 9
4. Trance 9
5. To the Wonder 9
6. The Great Gatsby 9
7. Upstream Color 9
8. The Internship 8.5
9. Pain & Gain 8.5
10. The Sapphires 8.5
johanlefourbe 10 years, 11 months ago at Jun 10 17:27 -
Seriously, 'Monsters University' at the top spot?

1. Trance 07/10
2. The great Gatsby 06/10
3. Iron man 3 06/10
4. GI Joe retaliation 05/10
5. A good day to die hard 05/10.

Sorry, I have seen only 5 movies so far... But you seem way too generous with your ratings.
garfield2710 10 years, 11 months ago at Jun 11 21:48 -
I've only seen 10 so far, so here they are ranked.

4. Iron Man 3 9/10
5. The Croods 9/10
6. 42 8/10

By the way, 'Monsters University' has not even been released yet...
FG93 10 years, 11 months ago at Jun 12 9:03 -
1. Gangster Squad 8/10
2. Oblivion 7-8/10
3. Iron Man 3 7/10

I've only seen these 3 so far, Gangster Squad easily being my favourite at the minute, Oblivion and Iron Man were good but I remember being more interested during Oblivion.
VierasTalo 10 years, 11 months ago at Jun 14 17:32 -
Haven't seen too many good films from this year yet, mostly crap or mediocre stuff. Here's the good ones:
Stoker 4/5
Only God Forgives 3ยฝ/5
Evil Dead 3ยฝ/5
Fast & Furious 6 3ยฝ/5
The Last Stand 3ยฝ/5

Really a boring year for film thus far.
the giraffe 10 years, 11 months ago at Jun 14 21:39 -
I haven't seen many films from this year either, but here's the best of the few I've seen...

1. Before Midnight
2. John Dies at the End
3. Sleepwalk with Me
4. Stoker
5. Wrong
JCase 10 years, 11 months ago at Jun 14 21:59 -
@Johan

He might be generous, but after looking at your ratings, and seeing that you rarely give any movie a rating below 5/10 even if you state in your "reviews" that they're terrible, seems way more generous if you ask me.

For me:

* Stoker
* Oblivion
* The Last Stand
* Warm Bodies
* Before Midnight
johanlefourbe 10 years, 11 months ago at Jun 15 6:13 -
@Jcase, I love movies, all of them, and I rarely see something which deserves a rating lower than 5 (the last one was probably 'Biker boys' for which I gave a 4). The point is that, in my opinion, there is always a specific context. For example, if you take an average action flick (let's say 'Drive Angry', a movie I just saw last week), I might have been disappointed by the whole thing but I still gave it a 5 rating because of the context surrounding this feature.

1. Was it actually suppose to be something deeper? Absolutely not.
2. Would the fans of the genre appreciate it? Probably.

With this mind and the fact that some 100 of professionals were involved to make this look decent, makes me think that it still deserves a 5 even though I didn't like it much. Does it make sense to you?

Have you ever read the reviews written by the late Roger Ebert? He always looked at all the details involved in a movie and very often could find some redeeming features even with some really average feature and even though he would be highly critical in his text, it would still end up with a 4 or 5 rating.

On the other hand, to rate 'Monsters University' with a 9.5 when it is clearly a weaker effort from Pixar (just check the various reactions on the internet or wait for my review in a couple of weeks ;) ) is rather dubious. Above all with this rating, you basically put it in the same league as classics such as 'The Godfather' and there is no way it is that good.

Anyway, rating a movie is a very personal thing and everybody has there own set of personal rules so I guess me and Stehako, we just have a different approach concerning this matter.

Well, I've only seen two, one good one bad:

Oblivion- 7/10
Mama- 2/10

Yeah, I don't go to the theaters often and I usually have to wait around a while to hear about a good film.
BradWesley123 10 years, 11 months ago at Jun 15 7:17 -

2013 hasn't really been a great year for movies. I mean there were a decent amount of good movies that came out this year, but it doesn't have many great movies like 2012 did.

But here's my top 10:

2. The Place Beyond the Pines 9/10
3. Olympus Has Fallen 8/10
4. Now You See Me 8/10
5. This is the End 8/10
6. The Last Stand 8/10
7. Dark Skies 8/10
8. The Incredible Burt Wonderstone 8/10
9. Warm Bodies 8/10
10. Snitch 8/10

Xanadon't 10 years, 10 months ago at Jul 20 10:54 -
1. Stoker -- 5 stars
2. Mud -- 5 stars
3. Frances Ha -- 4.5 stars
4. Before Midnight -- 4.5 stars
5. Gimme the Loot -- 4.5 stars
6. Trance -- 4.5 stars
7. The Great Gatsby -- 4 stars
7. Room 237 -- 4 stars
8. The Place Beyond the Pines -- 4 stars
9. Pacific Rim -- 3.5 stars
10. Jack the Giant Slayer / Star Trek Into Darkness / The Lone Ranger / Evil Dead all more or less tie for 10th -- 3.5 stars

Gangster Squad, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, This is the End, Iron Man 3, Mama, Oz The Great and Powerful, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, and Admission all received 1.5 or 2 star ratings from me.

And then there are 5 or 6 movies that fall in between.

2013 has actually been a slightly stronger year so far than I would've guessed.
CD Smiles 10 years, 10 months ago at Jul 25 13:54 -
I thought Evil Dead and Only God Forgives were awesome, Burt Wonderstone, Stoker and Gangster Squad were pretty crap.

^Yes, Only God Forgives was amazing. Totally underrated and misunderstood, much better than Drive...

I've watched 2 or 3 more, here is my list now:

1. Only God Forgives- 9.5/10
2. The Conjuring- 8/10
3. World War Z- 7/10
4. Oblivion- 7/10
5. Man of Steel- 7/10
6. The Last Stand- 4.5/10
7. Mama- 1/10 (If I could give this a "0" I would...)

Here is my list: http://www.listal.com/list/2013-in-film-thenoah
xxixii 10 years, 8 months ago at Sep 14 10:35 -
Pacific Rim for the visuals and giant robots fighting giant monsters - shame the middle section was a futile attempt to have a "story"

Iron Man 3 - enjoyable but dumb

The Great Gatsby - good first half but dropped the ball in the second

Evil Dead - a fairly pointless re-make vastly over-rated

The Conjuring - ho hum horror

Elysium - good but let down by a woefully predictible story arc

Oz The Great And Powerful - okay Sam Raimi on auto-pilot

@thenoah

You really thought Mama was that bad? I thought it was pretty much passable as whatever the hell it was trying to be.

Also, after Toronto International Film Festival a couple months ago I have to say I don't think any movie this year is going to top Why Don't You Play in Hell?.

Deleted 10 years, 5 months ago at Dec 12 7:32 -
Yeah, I really REALLY didn't like Mama. It had great source material (the original short is about the scariest thing ever) and yet it was just an abundance in CGI and a lack of scares, logic, story and heart, but to each their own.

I'll have to watch Why Don't You Play in Hell?, but first I'm going to check out Sono's other films.

Oh I got around to seeing Man Of Steel - If I had known it was directed by Zack Snyder I would have passed on it....BUT surprise surprise its actually a great movie and I stick my neck out and say its the best superhero film made yet...it gets the gravity and epicness down to a tee...the only other superhero flick up to that level is Chronicle

Now You See Me was a good candy floss mindbender...totally preposterous once you start to analyse it though!
