Baseball Cards/Action Figure Items?

Moderator

Would it be possible if in the future Listal could have an item category for things like Baseball Cards, Action Figures and Comic Books where you have one whole item (say, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Action Figure Series #1) and then you can check off items in the list that you own or want?

For that particular series, you'd have the following on the item page:

1) Leonardo - Owned Wanted
2) Donatello - Owned Wanted
3) Raphael - Owned Wanted
4) Michelangelo - Owned Wanted
5) Splinter - Owned Wanted
6) Shredder - Owned Wanted

And of course it would have a description with a primary image. Oh, and it would be custom-made. I think having this would certainly attract action figure/baseball card/comic book collectors to the site!

What do you guys think?

Possibly comic books, I don't think they others fit in with the media theme of the site.

The site's also about making lists, right? How more relevant could items that are checklists to collections be! Comic books would be cool, though. Whatever is decided on, I'd be fully willing to create item pages for them. Especially since I happen to own comics, action figures and other collectibles. And I'd think having this would attract the type of members that'll contribute to the community, since comics and related stuff have such a cult following.

I'm kind of torn at the moment. Would it be better to have one "Collections/Collectibles" section which includes comics and magazines, or a "Collections/Collectibles" section and a "Comics/Magazines" section? Because they'd both follow the format in my original post. Personally, I don't mind either way - it could be more concise to have one big section, but it could be more specific to separate them.

I posted this suggestion:
An item platform for Comics/Magazines.

ran88dom99 made this response:
comics are in books
magazines too maybe?

I think a separate section for "Periodicals" would be best. Comics on Amazon consist mostly of book-sized ones, not individually released ones. There are some individual ones, true, but they're misplaced. Also, do we really want a separate item page in Books for each single comic book? I think one big item page for a series/publication would be best, with the ability to check off the single releases within the item page. I've thus added the following edit: "Section could be titled "Periodicals"." That would just about cover it

I also posted this suggestion
Item platform for collectibles - ie, trading cards, action figures, POGS, etc.

His response:
um games category?
vote for my misc. section idea

Putting it in Games would make it follow the Games pages format, where it probably wouldn't follow the checklist format laid out in the original post. Also, you can't really categorize things like action figures or other toy sets as Games. We simply have to draw the line as to what we categorize as "Games" - board games and trading card games are about as far as I want to go from what Listal started with, which was just video games.

Though maybe I should have specified "Trading Cards" as things like baseball cards and not things like Pokemon or Yu-Gi-Oh! Okay, you got me. But perhaps the latter would be better under "Collections/Collectibles" than in Games, too.

ra88dom99, your comments are solid. I just didn't make my case well enough with those suggestions, and there's a lot of technical stuff to my ideas that I probably shouldn't have assumed other people would know. As for a Misc. section idea, well, that's another thread altogether. I don't know if we'd want to make a miscellaneous section, as I'd rather have a "Gadgets" or "Food" section than categorizing these two vastly different things together. Either way, though, it could allow for things that people want to have and list but can't.

I would like to add a comics/magazine section but not where you can list individual comics at least not initially.

Yes I agree that how it should be done. Although with some items this could become unmanageable e.g. with magic the gathering there are over 10,000 unique cards and I guess there are many thousands of unique baseball cards as well. I can't help thinking that people who want to list all their cards or comics they are are going to be better served with a more specialist sites e.g. here's one I just found for magic the gathering www.grimwar.com/ (which I would have loved when I played over 10 years ago)

I think anything that can be played as a game should be in the games section, e.g. magic the gathering: games section, baseball cards: collectibles section. Many people who play CCG's do not care about the collectible aspect of it.

I would prefer separate sections and forcing people to choose a section when adding a new item but initially they could remain together for searching purposes etc...

How are we talking about listing them? I mean the item page has a checklist on it where you can add individual comics to your collection (though on your collection page you'll probably only see the publication as apart of your collection) - not necessarily that you can create an item list with separate little comics/magazines in them.

I see. I would have proposed that each card set would have its own item page, not the whole game. So there'd still be a lot of meticulous work for Listalers, but it'd be broken up into chunks.

Fair enough. Sounds like you're seriously considering it! =)

Everything has editions. Tv shows have episodes, comics and magazines have issues and websites have pages. Computer games have mods i guess.
in each case the user would probably want 1) name 2) rating and possibly 3) picture 4) status like ownership

I think it would be faster to add a second page with this to every page of every category of item.
Then playable things go in games, magazines in books and everything else in the miscellaneous section.

Well being an avid comic collector and action figure collector I would love to see a section for both. Comics wouldn't be that hard. I mean I add my comics to the book section when I get one. As far as figures go it really would be that hard either. I mean they have a release date, manufacture. As far as list goes there plenty you can make. For example movie related figures, comic related figures, vampire figures, werewolf figures, movie maniacs. I think its a great idea. I look at this site for people that collect movies not just watch them. I mean the average user owns at least a 100 DVDS. So adding comics and figures would just increase the usage.

That's one of the things I thought about. A lot of these collectors are very internet savvy and could contribute to the site in very interesting ways.
