I always find it odd when Americans say they are democratic and such, when they clearly have a constitutional republic - i.e. NOT a true democracy. People only have power to elect a representative in their county, the president is chosen based on an 'electoral college' of winner-takes-all for each state, and the will of the people does not supersede the constitution.

Canada is not much better - we have a parliamentary monarchy, as our true head of state is still the Queen of England. But our Prime Minister is chosen based on which party gets the most seats in parliament - not true direct representation, but much more accurate than the electoral college.

True democracy is very hard to handle, as sometimes the will of the majority can be bad for a state and for any people in the minority, which is exactly why the founding fathers went for a republic rather than a democratic level of government. And ironically enough, the closest nation that is currently trying to be fully democratic is Venezuela which the US keeps trying to make them seem Marxist or that Chavez is a Dictator. The constitutional changes that Chavez is ramming thru are changes to give true power to the masses - basically trying to make a true democratic system of governance.
