Axis & Allies fans out here?

I went to add the Axis & Allies board game, but noticed there was no First Edition, only the new revised edition game, so I went to add it. And in process, I discover there's a half dozen Axis & Allies spin-offs! And the upcoming Anniversary edition looks insanely good!
I remember playing this board game at residence in college, like, every weekend with everyone on our floor. And you better never have been late, coz last person always got stuck with USSR.
Any Axis & Allies (board game) fans out here? And have anyone played any of the spin offs, or the revised editions? How do they compare to the original classic? worth getting?
I tagged all of them (no list for them yet), so here they are:

here's info on the new Anniversary edition, coming in October 2008:
that board is gigantic! 600+ pieces, and now inclusion of Italy as an Axis power? insane!
To celebrate the 50-year anniversary of Avalon Hill, Axis & Allies is launching its most expansive game ever. The Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition will feature the debut of Italy as the third Axis nation, the introduction of the cruiser unit to the naval lineup, and the largest Axis & Allies board to-date measuring 24x46 inches. With over 600 pieces, players will be able to recreate and decide the outcome of WWII like never before. The Axis & Allies Anniversary Edition is designed and developed by Larry Harris, the original designer of Axis & Allies, and will release on October 23, 2008.

Sounds like a more intricate version of Risk to me... I have never played AA but it sounds good!

I loved Risk, and we used to play that at college too, but once someone brought in A&A, nobody ever wanted to play Risk. It *is* very similar, but a lot more strategic rather than luck of the dice.
Try out the PC version (the Milton Bradley one, not the Atari RTS one) to see how the gameplay works.

Now days i think il stick to command and conquer etc, if they could make that more country, land based etc it would be brilliant.
