I think they both have merit, and there are bombs among both American (recent Cartoon Network productions) and Anime (Pokemon, sans the first season or so). There are too many to judge based on each specific cartoon, though. Ultimately, I watch pretty much just US cartoons. I don't really watch many cartoons nowadays though.

I enjoy a series like Gundam that has its own original plot. I'd rather read manga - via the Shonen Jump periodical - than the anime based off of them. There aren't really many manga I'd go out of my way to read in collected volumes anyway - pretty much just One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Dragon Ball.

With US cartoons, a story takes its own direction more often than the thing it derives its premise from. Then again, anime is so different from what I'm culturally used to that it has the advantage of being refreshing. So I think they're both potentially great.

Anime; they test their shows in print form before committing more money.

I'm tempted to say anime, but then I think of shows like Foster's Home, Samurai Jack and others... It's very hard to choose. : /

For me the answer is obvious - anime! Americans however also have some good cartoons, but they are - at least for me - not as good as anime.

Animes actually have messages, and plots, but it's nice to not have to watch a whole series to know what is going on. One episode of Family Guy, Johnny Bravo, Metalocalypse, or Superjail is self contained, and is purely entertaining.

The recent cartoons are a letdown (Total Drama Island...), but I have a lot of good memories of older cartoons. Anime has been good to me as well, but I have been watching less and less due to having to watch 26 of them instead of 1. I'd say flip a coin. If heads, I like cartoons better, tails, it's anime.

Anime is consistently better. However, the few shows America did get right
(Looney Tunes, Futurama, The Critic, etc.) still remain as my favorite cartoons.

I like some anime but I love American cartoons, many of them from 80s & 90s (and before too).

I liked very many cartoons as a child, as well as anime. But nowadays I only watch anime, and that i do constantly. Most of the time I think Anime just looks much better (or more interesting for my taste)-especially some of the recent stuff and I love its characteristics.
There really are some great cartoons but I'm going with Anime after all.

As a child I would have said American cartoons, but now I'd choose anime over that anytime. There are some really crappy cartoons out there now, I like some but others aren't what they use to be.

That's why I'm choosing Anime.

Anime, obviously. Seems to be a much wider variety, and the animation is just much prettier to look at. However, nothing can bet my love for Disney movies. Oh, Lion King, you will forever be with me

The thing with anime is that year after year horrendous huge amounts of series and ovas come out always about the same subjects, without innovation or style. Some school story about teens, nudity, gore, robots or same crappy supernatural phenomenon in a story with a, once again, main teen cast. However, among this many uninteresting series there are always some outstanding works that raise the bar, both in the animated form of art and in story telling. After all the Japanese have a mind and a inane capacity for mind-bending ideas that I rarely find anywhere else.

On the other hand, American cartoons have a lot of watchable series and certainly don't release as many crap as the Japanese studios. Many anime simply end up as incomplete series whose primary objective was mostly to promote its respective manga.

So in the end, it's rare the American cartoon that can compare to the best anime produced in Japan, and for me, a Princess Mononoke or a Cowboy Bebop is pure and simple, the pinnacle of quality.

Both American animation and Japanese animation have their greatness in the world and art of animation. What many tend to fail to realize is that there is actually not much difference between the two. Japanese animation in the beginning took many attributes from Betty Boop and Felix the Cat and incorporated them into what you see today. BTW "anime" ใ‚ขใƒ‹ใƒก (the japanese abbreviation for animation) literally translates to cartoon.

American Cartoons. I love stuff like Hey Arnold!, Courage the Cowardly dog style stuff. I try really hard to like anime type stuff but I just laugh and get irritated..sorry :)

I am a very avid fan of anime. I think that many of them are thought provoking, engaging, and just falt out awesome. That said, American and western animation is as a whole just a little bit better.

I hate the stigma that it is for kids when many cartoon films are just as engaging as live action counterparts. The secret of Nimh, Aladin, Beauty and the Beast, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, Fatasia, the list just For series you have things like Batman the animate series, Superman, Gargoyles, the 4kids Reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, just a lot of really good stuff.

You may point out that a lot of really good anime exist as well, and this is true. However there is one key difference between anime and american animation that is often overlooked (to my utter bewilderment) but is absolutely crucial. The average American show is 3 times more fully animated than the average anime. Key frames, moving stills, speed lines, partial animation, you name it, and any given anime will be absloutely full of it. I love anime, but it can sometimes be hard even to call some of it animation rather than slideshow. Point to american animation.

If you want to rip up my Otaku card for this, come and get it.

not to defend anime as an otaku (cos I am not) but there's something people often forget, budget. Usually american studios have a much wider budget concerning series or movies. As for the quality of animtion, genereally anime series are poorer compared to american series, but there are some Japanese works that certainly stand out.
jj1027 12 years, 8 months ago at Aug 25 2:13 -
There are indeed many outstanders, and yes, it is a matter of budget. Still, extenuating circustances don't really change the fact that the animation is not as good. Additionally, soime studios bring it on themselves, taking on too many projects at once.

Personally, I prefer American cartoons. But I have seen a few anime that I liked. I agree with the above and sometimes anime can look somewhat stilted and choppy.
But, I think part of y preference is also because I grew up in the late 70's through the 80's and mostly only saw American cartoons. I'm also a huge Disney fan and love just about everything they did up until the last several years.

I also don't like that so many people (especially Americans) think that just because something is animated that it's automatically considered for children. There's lots of animated stuff that is only for adults. And many adults if they give something a chance will probably find something they like. Of course, this is also true of movies that are rated below PG-13. So many people refuse to watch something unless it's rated PG-13 or R. So sad.

Well, I've never seen anything like "Lain" on American television, but, when it comes to anime, I can only watch the more avant garde stuff ("oh so random" anime humor does nothing for me), so %99 genre is totally is inaccessible to me, whereas I don't have any bias to American cartoon having to find it funny, so I'm just gonna cop out and say "tie"
