Allow .png images

While I can understand why gifs aren't allowed - 8 bit colour and suchlike - it would be nice if pngs were supported. High quality, low filesize.

if you are looking at images turned up in Google searches that turn out to be .gifs...just go back to the search page and right click to save the image that turns up on the main search page---it gets saved as a .jpg --- which can then be uploaded here.

However, allowing more than just the one picture/image file type would sure make uploading much needed pictures easier.

gifs would open up the site to the scourge of the animated gif. No one wants that ^_^. Otherwise, jpeg is the most common high quality format.

It's nice to see that pngs have managed to penetrate the mainstream consciousness, to some extent. For simplicities sake sticking with one format makes sense.

If you know what a png is you likely know how to save it as a jpeg (lossy to lossy conversion issues notwithstanding). Choice is good, but I think this can go to the bottom of the queue if it gets in the queue at all.

having done my fair share of image uploads ;) I can say that I think I ran into a PNG image once or twice, when I couldn't find an equivalent JPG. I ran into hard-to-find GIF images a lot more often, at least 30 or 40 times, especially in black & white photos, and a simple conversion from GIF to JPG format allowed me to upload the picture.

So PNG, at least what i've seen, is a non-issue at the moment, and GIF I'd rather listal NOT support at the risk of getting infested with animated GIFs.

I dunno about PNGs, I honestly don't use them much.
