A "Not interested" rating

Hyomil 15 years ago at Apr 16 11:45 -
I'd like to be able to rate movies as Not Interested like you can at Netflix so I can see at a glance which movies I've watched the trailers for and decided not to see, just like you can for Watched and Want To Watch. The poster is often sufficient for me to recognize a movie, but not as fast, and, since I mostly browse foreign titles, the titles are hard to remember.

When viewing other people's lists that can be hundreds of entries long, it seems logical that you would want to sort them so that all of your Not Interested movies are displayed last.

I've thought of creating a Not Interested list and moving such movies there, but I don't want to have to click on "Custom" every time for movies to see which lists they're on--and once I get a lot of lists, finding Not Interested amongst them becomes even more cumbersome.

If you don't want to alter the text layout, perhaps there could just be a red circle with a line through it icon like on Netflix or there could be some kind of color coding scheme so that you could assign a background color other than the default blue to part or all of a movie title on lists. Or maybe you could change the color of the stars to white or black instead of gray for such titles or you could put a horizontal red line running through the middle of them. Or replace the stars altogether with the text Not Interested and have the stars only appear when you hovered over it.

Or you could put a red outline around the poster thumbnail. I'm thinking maybe you could assign custom colors to this outline depending on which list of yours it belonged to. If you're going browsing for movies to add to a particular list, during that session, you would want all the movies on that are already on that list to be quickly visually identifiable in your search results.

Even if i dont really find this crucial, it does sound like a nice feature when combined with list integration and search integration.

I think while this is a subject of consideration, I'll just co-opt the Watched flag to use as a Not Interested flag. If I've watched a movie, I'll either:

1. give it a star rating, in which case marking Watched would be redundant. If I do sometimes mark it Watched, no harm done. Maybe it will turn out to be a little clearer visually to do both.
2. not give it a start rating either because I'm not interested in it or because it was something I watched so long ago that I don't remember what I thought of it (or care, usually, since my tastes have changed). In this case, I'll always mark it Watched.

This isn't ideal because if people see that I've "watched" something, they may ask me about it and I'll have to say that I decided not to watch it based on seeing the trailer or who the lead actors were or whatever, but maybe people will learn that if a movie is marked "Watched" but does not have a star rating, it probably remains unwatched. You could think of it like "Well, after seeing the trailer, I feel like I watched the whole thing."

Maybe the presence of a Watched without an accompanying rating could be counted as a negative when the site's algoritms are run. If someone did that, chances are they don't care much about that movie--at least not anymore.

One problem I see comes with lists. When viewing another user's lists, you can't see their Watched and Want To Watch settings (only your own). Thus users have no way of seeing my recommendations not to see a particular movie--only my ratings of the ones I've seen. (I might end up seeing a movie I marked as "Not Interested" if other people whose opinions I trusted recommended it to me and I might actually give it a high rating.) I'm still undecided as to whether to include my Not Interested's on lists because, while I don't want to present users with opinions that seem set in stone that are based only on seeing the trailers, users will add comments like "Hey, what about movies x, y, and z? Don't they belong on this list?" but I've already considered them--they just have no way of seeing that.

Having a "not interested" button would be a nice addition. This way you don't need to create a separate list.

Would love to see this implemented.

I'd like to see a "not interested" button as well, with the option to filter out the items I've marked as such. That'd be especially nice when I'm browsing recommendations or exploring areas.
