A few suggestions
Deleted user

Hi Tom, recently I've been addicted to this place and I enjoy contributing. But I also have a few suggestions that might be taken into consideration:
The Search Function
At the moment, let's say you search for 'Blade Runner' but accidentally have 'games' selected, you get no search results. I was wondering if a sort of 'smart search' system could be employed, kind of like Amazon and Play.com use which displays the results of 'Blade Runner' from movies, books, games etc etc...
Points for votes
At the moment, voting for reviews doesn't really serve any purpose. I think it might be an idea if say, 5 points were given to the original reviewer if someone votes for their review? It makes writing reviews more rewarding! Obviously you can vote for your own reviews, so that option should be taken off or worth 0 points.
Thumbs down
You can vote positively for a review, but how about the option to pan it? To stop people who have a different opinion abusing this function, you should include a reason for why you didn't find the review helpful. e.g poor english, too long, too short, biased etc. Then reviews can be listed in how many positive votes they receive, rather than in chronological order.
The Groups section
At the moment, this area is destroying listal and genuinely decent members are leaving over it. If I had my own way, everyone with an anime avatar would be banned! How about the following suggestions?
- Have a minimum requirement before you can post in the groups. e.g you need to rate over 100 items?
- Remove points for posts, or cut it down to 1 point per post.
- The people who are ruining the groups area are easily spotted, just ban them! They are not contributing to any listing whatsoever!
- Employ some sort of moderation, not just because of the anime nerds, but because recently I've seen advertising bots spaming up the place. It's only a matter of time before the porn bots arrive!
- Look at members who have very high ranks but have very little contribution to LISTAL. They don't deserve to be ranked so highly and should be docked points.
- Put an age limit on the forums? Most of the people who spam that place are 13 years old, make the minimum age 16 or something!
- Ban role playing!
That's all I can think of right now!

There used to be points for voting, but it was abused by people who would just go down the list and vote for every other review and climb the ranks insanely quickly.
If anything, I think votes should count for points for the person who wrote the review. Maybe 1 point for voting and 5 points for having your review voted for or something.
Also, negative votes (thumbs down), if they're implemented, should *cost* 10 points, and no one should be able to give a negative vote before acquiring 1000 points themselves. Otherwise it would be ridiculously easy for someone to create a few phony accounts and bury their "enemy's" reviews.

Yep, that suggestion where the original review writer gets the points for writing the review was what I was making! The voter should get no points in my opinion, but I guess 1-2 wouldn't hurt. I believe an accident made it 50 points to the voter last time and that was just absurd.

Good suggestions.
I think the review should get points for writing a review, and the voter should get no points but give points to the reviewer.

I definitely agree. Take away points for message board postings and give points to people whose reviews are voted for. It makes it much for fair. It gives points to those who are actually contributing to the listal community by providing information instead of mindless one word message board postings.

I agree with you all.
Points from posting on the boards are now useless thanks to the Narutards and I'm with Grand for banning them too, but I'm just peeved.
I think giving reviewers points for getting votes is a great way of saying thanks for contributing so I'm for it.

Good suggestions, Uber. I don't claim to have been on this forum as long as the rest of you guys, but I have different applications and have gotten to learn what works in some online communities. Can I add some things?
I think it'd also be really useful if it would correct you and give you an option of what you might've meant.
All the search would need to do is save some of the criteria that just barely got filtered out, right?
That's what they do at Amazon. How about just listing based on votes anyway? If it's a case where the number of reviews gets distracting, there's bound to be some votes in the mix. If not, it's our duty as Listal members to have personal biases and vote, vote, vote!
I think the report function and comments should cover criticism. That and personal messaging, where no one else will be able to see the explicit redundancy and sparse usage of lowercase.
Some forums have a posting cycle where you gain your worth slowly but surely... Uh, well, the poster earns the ability to make more posts a day until they're finally accepted as full-time members and pretty much have complete posting abilities. Most of the members you won't care for will be the ones that are completely turned-off by that.
Just one point sounds good to me. I'd like to see a completely odd number as my point listing every now and then.
Maybe they shouldn't be able to use the forums. It'd be like a Parental Controls function. Tom of Listal is looking out for all his kiddies, we'll say! If you need anything or just want to talk, message Tom! Remember that there's no such thing as a stupid question - Tom will satisfy your curiosity!
That, right there, is the type of thing parents will complain about their kids digesting.

I agree with all the above. Kill points for message board postings.
This user is ranked 24th with 26460 points and he/she/it has 0 items listed (and no tags, ratings, reviews, etc).
If the goal of points/ranks is to encourage people to contribute to Listal then there's something seriously wrong with a user being able to contribute nothing and get into the top 25.

Adding...
There are currently 4 users in the top 30 who've managed to rack up a combined total of almost 100,000 points despite only having only listed 155 items between them:
http://kinookami.listal.com/
http://hokagexashley.listal.com/

I will be updateing the points soon, points for getting votes will be added. Points for voting was never supposed to happen.
Thumbs down voting - I don't like that as it's negative I prefer keeping things positive in this site.
Search Function - Too slow to search all categories but I can add extra help messages.

One how can you tell what their points are?
And don't they also gain 100 for every picture they post?
If added pictures still gain points then they're also gaming the system by posting every anime picture they can find.

Uber: if you click on the "People" tab at the top of the page then in the "sort by" drop down box choose "Listal points" and click the "Update member list" button you'll see everyone's points from highest to lowest.

uh...
But other than that I think all the other suggestions are much needed. And it'd be neat to get points if you get voted for a review, and it'd be even more amazing if the more votes a review has the higher it's shown on a list. But then I again I can already see 500 votes for something that says "yeah. it was funny," or something of that nature.
It hurts my silly ego to see someone who have listed nothing yet have an insanely higher ranking than me.

First of all, settle down. *I'm* not saying anyone should be banned or driven away from the site. I'm just saying that:
1) The Groups should be more tightly moderated to prevent chaotic posting which drives away potential new users
and
2) That posts to the Groups should not weight as heavily as they currently do when it comes to giving points to determine rank.
The original intention of the points and rank was to encourage people to make meaningful contributions to Listal, but the way the points are assigned now doesn't really do that.
Consider that this user is ranked 23rd with over 29,000 points despite having no items listed, no item ratings, no item tags, no reviews, etc, while this user is ranked 33rd with only 20,000 points and he has 2,400 items listed, 2,600 item ratings, almost 200 reviews, and lots of tags.
Don't get me wrong, posting in the groups is valuable to the site to some extent, but not nearly as important as adding reviews, ratings, tags, etc.
The points and ranks should properly reflect the meaningfulness of each users' contribution to making Listal a place where ALL people want to join, not just Anime fans.

If I could change anything tomorrow, I would remove the points for posting in the group section. I'd even delete any points gained from 4 months ago to now from posting in the groups section to even this site out again.
I really am not enjoying posting here anymore because of these morons.

I agree Grand Assault & I feel exactly the same way. It's become a waste of our time really.

I agree with them, I don't ever really come to the groups section anymore, don't really come to listal much either and I'd never recommend the site as it is. I think it's sad that this has been allowed to go on for so long and that to all appearances will be allowed to continue just as it is.The fact that you are allowing these kids to come on and be so disrespectful to longstanding members is bad enough, when they don;t contribute anything beneficial to the site at all makes it even worse. I feel if you had respect for your real members and the intent of this site you'd do something to put a stop to it.

I think moderation is a call. While I don't really pay much heed to points as numbers (read my About My Collection rant and you'll understand my opinion of numbering), it's important for ranking so people have those top 600 'reference' members. I don't post for points, but the points system should be adjusted for ranking and the moderation system for general unity.
Last I heard, Tom was working on a system for moderation and pondering potential alternate point values.
