I don't bet on horses, but just wondering, which of these are bigger 'internationally'? As in, which one is Formula 1 and which is Formula 3000?

Kentucky Derby, or

The Grand National

The Grand National is an amazing race...
however, the Kentucky Derby is the BIG RACE here in the US.

Post Position draw for the 2008 Kentucky Derby happens this week
and the "Run For The Roses" is this Saturday. :)

BTW, (for folks interested) you must, if you possibly can,
MUST see the movie The First Saturday in May.
It is fantastic. If you can possibly see it this week
before the Derby, that makes it even better.

No offence was meant but we tend to get people/bots signing up just to advertise their websites. Adding nothing to the dynamic of the groups. Considering this is the only thread you've posted in, it just looked a bit suspicious is all.

I won ยฃ15 on the Grand National from a minor bet so I'm sold on that already. (H)

I should point out Listal has an entry for that film, so if you Dell or anyone else wants to add in some tags, images, or even post a review after you've seen it, that's what makes this site grow.

Seems like the original post was meant to advertise a website regarding upinclass racing forum, but the guy is talking to us too. This thread is no different from that "Anime Threads" user who advertises their site, or that dude who came on Listal primarily to promote his cheesy kids book. (See what i did there, mouse...cheese....ah forget it....)
Anyway, if Dells here to post then we should converse with him. If he had posted the advert and someone had replied and he didnt reply again at all etc, then a Mod should surely delete it the ad and thats that? But since he is holding conversation in more than one thread, where is he going wrong?

How long is the KD Dell? and (since i wont be looking it up on wikipedia any time soon) How many horses race in it? 2 minutes doesn't sound long enough for it to be the greatest horse race on earth, although im only saying so because i thought the Grand National went on for longer.....

Thats fair enough etc, i just think most of the sarcasm and offensiveness stemmed from the misunderstanding. Lets get things back on topic, anyone know anything about this Kentucky Derby?

I dont want to attack anyone, and I welcome anyone who will use the site and contribute to it, I really do. Dell is a educator, I think he will welcome/can handle a little bit of debate. Dells been around for a bit now anyway, he's hardly a new member. You cant blame people for reading the opening couple of posts as a bit ad-like...maybe I launched to far, like Dell admitted he did initially, I bet we're ironically similar.

I didnt even know what the Kentucky Derby was from the opening post; or what kind of converstation Dell was hoping to iniate; but as a big horse racing fan I welcome conversation on the topic. What are the odds on the favourite? and how many horses race?

Hello rb6k,

The Kentucky Derby is run at a distance of 1 1/4 Miles
and is limited to the Top Twenty 3 year old money winners in the country.
The great Secretariat is the only horse to ever crack that 2 minute mark.
I doubt any horse will ever run a faster Kentucky Derby!

Here's something that may be of interest to the ladies on the forum:
This year a Filly may be running in the big race against the boys.

Fillies, Eight Belles and Proud Spell are both nominated
to run in the 2008 Kentucky Derby.

Eight Belles is the most likely candidate to run this year,
and she may actually have a shot to beat the colts.
Proud Spell will probably run in the Kentucky Oaks on Friday.

Only 38 fillies have Run for the Roses in it's the 133 year history.
There have not been any fillies in the Derby since 1999,
when Excellent Meeting finished 5th and Three Ring finished last.

Only 3 Fillies have ever won the Kentucky Derby.
The last female Derby winner was Winning Colors in 1988,
with Genuine Risk in 1980 and Regret in 1915 the only others.

It's going to be a great race... and it all happens this Saturday!

out of curiosity, are horses drug-tested the way athletes are?

Sounds rather interesting as it goes Dell! Might see if it is on any UK tv channels at all, though it is unlikely. I presume at 3 years old they are at their peak so the top 20 would be the best? 2 minutes for 1 1/4 mile is pretty impressive!!
Dell Yount 16 years ago at Apr 28 21:40 -
RE: Drug Testing
Yes... absolutely!
Racing officials are particularly strict for the Kentucky Derby.

Sadly, the same cannot be said at some of our smaller race tracks.
Performance enhancing drugs are out there and being used in every sport.
Unfortunately, the chemists are developing them faster than the tests
can be created to catch these crooked "sportsmen."

I was so disappointed when Olympic Gold Medalist, Marion Jones was busted.
And now we find that even High School athletes are using steroids.
It is a sad state of affairs when big $$$ makes cheating to win an option.

In the sport of horse racing, (if I were in charge)
I would BAN FOR LIFE any trainer or vet involved in doping horses!

I think any sportsman who cheats in any way should be banned. Although they could always make an Olympics/sport where cheating was ok hehe. "The druggies Olympics" If runners want to ruin themselves with drugs to make them faster the only winners are the people being entertained. Sounds like a bit of a horrible thing to think but i mean imagine someone being able to run a race 10 times faster than a regular human? It would look pretty spectacular.
