10 ratings

I have rated only 5 movies a 10,I have watched according to Listal 488 now I want to know what makes everyone vote something a ten. Is it writing, acting, story, all is it everything. What makes you rate a movie the perfect 10

Easy, the movie has to be perfect... for my taste of course (ex. Memento)

I keep the last star (4,5 - 5) to the most awesome movies that i like for ever, and only rate 10 the best movie I have ever seen.

At johanlefourbe, but what makes Memento so perfect, why did you rate it so high

All my favorite movies gets a 10. It's that easy.

But what makes them so perfect. Inception for me is 10 because, well because my favorite director-christoher nolan, favorite actress-ellen page, and my 2nd favorite actor-leonardo dicaprio are in it so thats a start. Everything is just perfect, its very original, the writing, the effects, acting, its just all perfect.

To actually answer your question, RJ4, there are many things that go into it, as you can imagine. The most important to me is the story and screenwriting. Is it original, captivating, clever, thoughtful, intelligent? Those are the questions I ask.
The second most important is the acting. I can't take the movie seriously if the actors aren't completely into it and believable. If they get me wrapped up in their story it makes the viewing experience so much better.
The third most important is cinematography and production value. I look at the unique camera shots, the coloring, the lighting, the use of backdrop and props, the sets and the scenery. These are all important to setting a mood or feeling of the movie. Plus, if the producers are willing to spend more money on quality sets, costumes, and locations then it gives me more confidence in what they are trying to accomplish and in the end more appreciation.
BUT if the writing and acting are bad then the production value means shit.
Some recent examples of movies that will receive a 10 from me because they excelled in these three categories:
Inception
Black Swan
True Grit
The Social Network
I hope I answered you question. It is a good question.

That was a good thought/answer, and i gotta agree Inception is a ten for me also

I think it's rather difficult to say what makes a movie perfect. With so many genres & aspects to "being good" involved, well, yanno. I suppose I think it's the same criteria as with what defines a classic. I know I've rated what seems like a lot of films with a perfect score, but I really thing they are; here're a few:
Ginger Snaps
Teeth
Martyrs
Freaks
Coffee & Cigarettes
They're all pretty beautiful.

It is different for every genre. Every genre has a different set of standards to weigh a perfect film by. Once I establish what my perfect film for a certain genre is then I measure films against it.

Sorry for late reaction...
Why is Memento is perfect? Actually, it is not. I can think of a couple of things which aren't... But it doesn't matter !
It was perfect in the sense that I was completely fascinated and entertained by the story, the acting and the directing throughout the whole movie. It has to be original and challenging and entertaining at the same time. And Memento is one of the few movie which managed to do that.
The more movies are watched the more difficult it is to give a 10 (I just don't do it anymore...). For example, Inception was a great movie but I gave it a 9 not a 10. Why ? A couple of reasons. For example, it took me like 20 minutes to get into the movie. And also, the story was kind of confusing some times. These are actually small details because I really loved this movie and it is my favorite of 2010. But it is how it works for me. If it's great but there are a couple of things that bothers me, it gets a 9 not a 10.
Eventually, there are no rules for rating a movie. You make your own standards. Like kgbelliveau, many people rate their movie depending on the genre. I don't do that. I won't change my rating because the movie is a comedy, an action movie, a drama or whatever. What is a good movie or not ? That's it.
Some other people just give 1 for a bad movie and 10 for a good movie. That's it. Black or White. That's another way to look at it.
My experience is the more you watched movies the more you can compare and the more you realize there are really only a few original and unique movies deserving a 10 but that's a personal point of view... And there are still some great 9 movies out there !
