During the war, she was deported to Auschwitz with her family, she survived but lost her mother, father and brother.
She studied law and political science, and later became a politician. In the 1970s, she was Minister of Health and pushed forward two notable laws : the first one facilitated access to contraception and the second one legalized abortion in France, her hardest political fight and for which she is best known.
