After majoring in chemistry and pharmacology at the University of Tennessee, New York-native Samuel G. Engel signed on as an assistant director at Warner Bros. in 1933. Three years later he was invited by old Warners colleague Darryl F. Zanuck to join the producers staff at 20th Century-Fox. Following Navy and OSS service in World War II, Engel returned to Fox, where he rapidly re-established himself as producer and co-writer of My Darling Clementine (1946).
