Description:
Samuel Colt was an American firearm designer, an industrialist, and an entrepreneur. He didn't create the earliest revolver (the earliest known revolver (with a moving cylinder and a single barrel) was created by Hans Stopler in 1597 in Germany), but, inspired by the capstan and the windlass, he created an improved pepperbox revolver in 1830. That revolver used a pawl (also called a hand), a ratchet, and a hammer to rotate barrels, and a barrel stop to lock them. Then he created and patented an improved model in 1835 with the help of several gunsmiths including John Pearson. The new revolver was named the Colt Paterson (after a

That revolver used a pawl (also called a hand), a ratchet, and a hammer to rotate barrels, and a barrel stop to lock them. Then he created and patented an improved model in 1835 with the help of several gunsmiths including John Pearson. The new revolver was named the Colt Paterson (after a city in New Jersey). All parts were interchangeable. To mass produce it, Colt created Patent Arms Manufacturing Company in Paterson (New Jersey) in 1836. Colt also used his marketing, manufacturing, and management strategies to become successful in the firearm industry.
After the closure of his first company in 1842, Colt created a new revolver prototype. Then Samuel Walker helped him create the Colt Walker revolver in 1846. The success of the new revolver helped Colt create a new company in Hartford (Connecticut) in 1848. It was named Colt's Manufacturing Company. A Colt Dragoon revolver was created in the same year. Colt extended his patent in 1849, and he was very protective of his patents. This allowed Colt to hold a monopoly on revolvers in the USA until 1857. He also created a firearm manufacturing plant in London (the UK) in 1853.
