The Rev. W. Awdry was an English Anglican cleric, railway enthusiast and children's author. He was the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine, the central figure in his acclaimed Railway Series. He wrote the first Railway Series book in 1945 and continued writing these books until he retired in 1972. His son Christopher Awdry was the first boy to hear one of these stories and when his father retired. He wrote many more Railway Series books including 'Wilbert the Forest Engine' named after his father.
The Rev. W. Awdry died in 1997, aged 85
