Philip Andrew Luty was a British firearm designer, a farmer, a writer, a gun rights activist, a free speech activist, and a political prisoner. He was born in Leeds on October 19, 1964. In 1998, he was sentenced to 4 years in prison for "illegal arms construction". In 2005, his father and his brother were arrested and wrongfully charged for "conspiracy to manufacture firearms".
In 2009, Luty was charged for "making a record of information likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism" and for owning a "collection of pipes which could be screwed together to produce an item from which a bulleted cartridge could be discharged". Luty died from cancer on April 8, 2011 before his trial could end.
In comparison, in 2017, Lavinia Woodward of the UK was given a 10-month prison sentence suspended for 18 months for attacking and injuring her boyfriend with a knife. The judge Ian Pringle said Woodward faced a possible maximum sentence of three years in prison. And he also said that a custodial prison sentence was "too severe" for her because it could ruin her medical career.
