Niki Lauda (1949–2019) was an Austrian Formula One driver, aviation entrepreneur, and motorsport executive, best remembered for his resilience and brilliance on the track. Born Andreas Nikolaus Lauda in Vienna, he entered Formula One in 1971 and quickly rose to prominence with Ferrari, winning his first World Championship in 1975. A year later, he survived a near-fatal crash at the Nürburgring that left him with severe burns, yet he returned to racing just six weeks later in what is considered one of the most courageous comebacks in sporting history.
