With Whatever, Mortal, Chicago avant-rocker David Pajo's career continues to take the most peculiar twists and turns. In the decade that separates the release of this, his third album as Papa M, and the epochal Spiderland, the undisputed masterwork of his influential Louisville band Slint, Pajo has embraced a whole spectrum of styles: incendiary math-rock, serene post-rock, haunting dub experimentalism, eerie sound collaging, and brittle acoustic folk. Whatever, Mortal chiefly follows the rustic acoustic ramble that characterised the last Papa M full-length, Papa M Sings, and while Pajo's voice is admittedly nothing special, his skilled team of collaborators--Will Oldham on co-production, and a band that includes ex-Rodan member Tara Jane O'Neill and ex-Slint bandmate Britt Walford--lend the album a strange, otherworldly aura, haunting guitar feedback intermingling with the sleepy twang of banjo and the occasional strummed sitar. This, combined with, the offbeat, sometimes bawdy nature of Pajo's lyrics ("There is something like a wall between us / That stopped you going down on my penis") means the likes of "Over Jordan" and "Sorrow Reigns" are oddly reminiscent of the carnal folk tales on Bonnie Prince Billy's Ease Down the Road. Whatever, Immortal is another intriguing collection from Pajo --where will he go next? -- Louis Pattison
