Lush, sweeping, painstakingly produced, and often terribly sad, the music of British duo Lighthouse Family is simply gorgeous. Whether one digs the pair's insistence on manicuring every element of their sound, there can be little debate that Paul Tucker and Tunde Baiyewu craft pop melodies that are Bacharachian in their grandeur. The majestic, bigger-than-life "End of the Sky" takes a full orchestral treatment, while "(I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be) Free/One"--borrowing from both Nina Simone and U2--reaches its crescendo with a full-tilt gospel choir. It's impressive but also a tough act to follow, and the disc's second half feels somewhat sluggish. Still, the haunting beauty of comparatively low-key songs like "Run" and "Happy"--which nevertheless feature prominent strings and, like all the other songs, Baiyewu's chocolaty voice--qualify Whatever Gets You Through the Day as a modern suite worth investigating. --Kim Hughes
