Whether you view him as a figure of fun or a sussed broadcaster of integrity and passion, Tim Westwood is the most important individual in the UK's burgeoning hip-hop industry. His Radio One shows ensure he has the ears of everyone in the country interested in rap music, so his first foray into the compilation market is a notable event. Sticking close to the party-centric flavours of the rap mainstream, this album has no room to represent homegrown talent--a situation Westwood has committed to rectifying with the inevitable Volume 2. For now, though, he's content to provide this document of the state of American rap, and Westwood is a fine, agenda-free compilation that succeeds because its only aim is to avoid filler. British chart hits from the likes of Dr Dre ("The Next Episode"), Ludacris ("What's Your Fantasy") and Eminem ("The Way I Am") nestle alongside some more underground head-bangers. So hip-hop neophytes will be introduced to the likes of Pharoahe Monch's outrageous "Simon Says", Noreaga's "Superthug", replete with whirring helicopter blades and a crisp Neptunes-produced backing track, and the blazing "Party Up (Up In Here)" from everyone's favourite bald-headed, dog-loving rapper/film star, DMX. --Angus Batey
