The song was originally produced by Bobby Orlando and released in 1984 (see Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls) and became a minor club hit. But in 1985, Pet Shop Boys signed with EMI / Parlophone and re-recorded the song with producer Stephen Hague. This version was released on October 28, 1985 (12 Feb 1986 in North America) and eventually topped the charts worldwide.
