Description:
Much of this "music from and inspired by" the Mel Gibson Vietnam film seems chosen to fit an easy "inspirational" mood rather than any painful facts about that (or any) war. Song after song offers "Wind Beneath My Wings"-style reassurance and the use of words like "soldier" and "fighting" as non-specific metaphors for situations that could just as well be a tough driver's test or a standoff with an in-law. Mixed in with the sonic rut that signifies atmosphere and with incongruities such as Johnny Cash's matchup with a yowling Dave Matthews are quiet, detailed vignettes by Mary Ch
