Description:
Give the Warp folks some credit for modesty: where most labels would see an anniversary box as an opportunity to advertise their uniqueness, this Sheffield, England-based company has devoted two CDs of their six-CD anniversary set to the people who first inspired them. Disc 1 makes clear that they don't forget the Motor City. This is the American disc, heavy on the Detroit sounds of Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson, with some tracks from the New York and Chicago scenes thrown in as well. Disc 2 is, by and large, the British response to this American ferment, starting with the "The Theme," by the Unique 3
Disc 2 is, by and large, the British response to this American ferment, starting with the "The Theme," by the Unique 3 (the first group Warp tried, and failed, to sign) and moving on to the more renowned 808 State and A Guy Called Gerald. This is a strong, historically informative set that moves from the lush, romantic sounds of the early Detroit school to the protobrutality of the first acid-house track (Phuture's "Acid Tracks") to the tribal sounds of the Brits. If there's one caveat, it's that there's nothing here that distinguishes this as a purely Warp set of influences. Influences is a standard selection of the tracks that rocked the English music scene circa 1989, and they've clearly had an effect on anyone who's made music with computers since. But there's nothing that hints at the strange twists and turns that have made the name "Warp" so apt for the label's output. --Jeff Salamon
