Guitarist Ralph Towner was impressed by the performance he saw at an Italian music festival by the prodigious British pianist John Taylor and singer Maria Pia De Vito--so much so that later that evening he suggested forming a trio. While Towner and Taylor are lynchpins of the ECM stable, De Vito is not as well known. She has an impressive CV, nonetheless, having worked with Michael Brecker, Kenny Wheeler and Joshua Redman in addition to her compatriots Enrico Rava and Gianluigi Trovesi. On the title track, which is a stylistic departure from the rest of the album and could be explored further in the future, De Vito uses her voice as a percussion instrument, with her voice marvellously imitating a tabla. Elsewhere, De Vito has written lyrics (sung in Italian) to half of the tracks, the standout of which is the haunting "Chiara", which she co-wrote with Towner. As accompanists go, John Taylor is probably the most intuitive pianist a jazz singer could hope for, and yet Ralph Towner's sympathetic and thoughtful performances connect perfectly with their musical vision. It is perhaps as a composer, though, that Towner makes his greatest contribution to the project. On his compositions "Renewal", "I Knew It Was You", and "Redial", De Vito eschews lyrics in favour of wordless vocalisations and the interplay between the three moves onto another level entirely. --Madelyn Cohen
