Description:
Long established as one of America's foremost independent labels, LA-based Vagrant showcase their current roster of garage heroes and slacker anthems on Another Year on the Streets. Rocket From The Crypt's boozed-up rockabilly ("Alone") and Alkaline Trio's ticked-off charge ("Hell Yes, Metro") are present and unapologetic, but it's the rising stars of emo, who wear their tattered emotions and trampled hearts on their sleeves, who sound like rock's great hope. If Blink 182 are skate-punk for jocks, then Hot Rod Circuit, Saves The Day and Get Up Kids are shouting loud and clear that geeks have feelings too. Dum
Long established as one of America's foremost independent labels, LA-based Vagrant showcase their current roster of garage heroes and slacker anthems on Another Year on the Streets. If Blink 182 are skate-punk for jocks, then Hot Rod Circuit, Saves The Day and Get Up Kids are shouting loud and clear that geeks have feelings too. Dumped and downtrodden, it's a sensitive souls rebellion of under-dog angst and Weezer-like riffs. While Saves The Day take home the prize for best black humour sing-along with "Ups & Down"'s examination of hanging, it's Christopher Carrabbas, aka Dashboard Confessional, who really explains what it's like to be a lovelorn geek. Like Ben Folds pouring-out his heart over a chugging acoustic, "Hands Down"'s humble confession "my hopes are so high that your kiss might kill me / so won't you kill me / so I die happy" will make Carrabbas the champion of losers the world over. --Dan Gennoe
